Marcia Cross, widely recognized for her portrayal of Bree Van de Kamp on ‘Desperate Housewives’, has shared a rare selfie, offering fans a glimpse into her life after stepping back from major television roles.

The photo, reportedly taken during a first-class flight, was posted on social media and quickly garnered attention, as Cross is not frequently active online.

This image comes from a time when the actress has largely remained out of the public eye. At 64 years old, she has been working less in recent years, making only occasional appearances compared to her earlier decades in television.

Cross has built her career across several major TV eras. She first appeared in soap operas such as ‘The Edge of Night’, ‘Another World’, and ‘One Life to Live’. She also had early roles in ‘Knots Landing’ and guest spots in popular series like ‘Cheers’, ‘Seinfeld’, ‘Quantum Leap’, ‘Ally McBeal’, and ‘Spin City’. These roles established her as a familiar face in American television long before her biggest breakout.

Her major turning point came in 1992 when she joined ‘Melrose Place’ as Dr. Kimberly Shaw. This role made her widely known, as her character became one of the show’s most dramatic and unpredictable figures. Cross remained on the series until 1997, appearing in storylines that often pushed the limits of soap opera drama.

She later mentioned that some of those plots felt extreme. She once described her character’s storyline as “insane”, citing events like a hidden brain tumor and even blowing up an apartment complex as examples of how far the show went.

After ‘Melrose Place’, Cross continued to work in television and film, including small roles in various projects. However, her biggest success came in 2004 when she was cast as Bree Van de Kamp in ‘Desperate Housewives’. The show became a massive global hit and ran for eight seasons until 2012.

In the series, Cross portrayed a perfectionist suburban homemaker whose life gradually unraveled over time. The show became one of the defining TV hits of the 2000s, solidifying her status as a household name alongside co-stars like Teri Hatcher, Eva Longoria, Felicity Huffman, and Nicollette Sheridan.

Despite its success, Cross later stated that the role made it more challenging for her to find similar opportunities afterward. In an interview with Variety, she explained how long-running fame from one character can shape an actor’s future. She said, “I always assumed that after ‘Desperate Housewives’, there will be a third act. It has not happened yet. That’s the double-edged sword of being an ‘icon.’ Everybody thinks you are that character and by the time they forget about it, you are not on anybody’s list anymore.”

After ‘Desperate Housewives’ concluded, Cross appeared in a few smaller projects, including ‘Law & Order: SVU’ and the series ‘Quantico’, where she portrayed President Claire Haas from 2015 to 2017. However, she has not taken on another major long-running role since then.

Outside of acting, Cross has also been open about personal challenges, including her health. In 2018, she revealed that she had been treated for anal cancer and later entered remission. She has emphasized the importance of discussing illness and recovery openly.

Cross, who studied acting at Juilliard before her career took off, has mentioned in past interviews that working in Hollywood later in life can be challenging, especially for women over 60. Nevertheless, her recent rare selfie demonstrates continued interest from fans who fondly remember her most iconic roles, particularly Bree Van de Kamp, which remains one of television’s most recognizable characters.
