Hannah Waddingham Discusses Ted and Rebecca Romance in ‘Ted Lasso’
Hannah Waddingham recently shared insights about her role in Ted Lasso, the show’s upcoming return, and the ongoing fan curiosity regarding whether her character Rebecca Welton should pursue a romance with Ted Lasso, portrayed by Jason Sudeikis. This interview was conducted by K.J. Yossman, with photographs taken by Zoe McConnell.
Waddingham clarified that she does not perceive Rebecca’s relationship with Ted as romantic, despite some fans speculating otherwise. She emphasized her appreciation for how the show maintains their connection on a deeper level beyond romance.
She stated, “I love that we buck against the norm,” referring to the dynamic between Ted and Rebecca. She elaborated, “And they are undoubtedly soulmates, but that can mean a myriad of things.” For her, the term “soulmates” encompasses a strong emotional bond that doesn’t necessarily imply a romantic relationship.
Waddingham also addressed the notion that fans desire a romantic union between the characters. She acknowledged understanding why people might think that way, but she disagrees with steering the story in that direction. She remarked, “I love all the relationships in it.” This includes the friendships, team dynamics, and the broader ensemble of characters in AFC Richmond.
This discussion arises as Ted Lasso gears up for its fourth season, following the conclusion of the third season, where Rebecca took significant steps in her personal and professional life. Waddingham expressed her happiness about the show’s continuation, highlighting her deep connection to Rebecca.

Much of her interview centered on returning to the character and collaborating again with Jason Sudeikis, who co-created the series and plays Ted. She described their working relationship as flexible and always evolving on set. She mentioned, “With that boy, you’ve got to roll with the punches. He and I have an ongoing love-hate relationship that he changes it last minute.” While this comment referred to their collaborative dynamic, it also reflects the creative interplay that shapes scenes between Ted and Rebecca.
Despite the persistent fan theories, Waddingham’s perspective remains steady. She views the relationship as significant without the necessity of romance. Her remarks indicate that the show will likely continue to nurture Ted and Rebecca’s connection in a non-romantic manner, focusing more on emotional understanding and mutual respect than a conventional love story.
