Apple TV+ is set to launch its new psychological thriller series ‘Cape Fear’, and early reviews from critics are already shaping viewer expectations.

The eight-episode miniseries currently boasts a 73% score on Rotten Tomatoes, based on 15 reviews, indicating that most critics have responded positively to this latest adaptation of the classic tale.

Created by Nick Antosca, ‘Cape Fear’ is inspired by John D. MacDonald’s novel ‘The Executioners’ and follows the legacy of the renowned 1962 and 1991 film adaptations. This new version features Javier Bardem as Max Cady, a menacing ex-convict released from prison after 17 years. Once free, he begins to target Tom and Anna Bowden, the married attorneys linked to his past. Using his understanding of the legal system, Cady skillfully infiltrates their lives while evading justice.

The series features a stellar cast alongside Bardem. Amy Adams portrays Anna Bowden, while Patrick Wilson plays her husband Tom. Lily Collias and Joe Anders take on the roles of their children, Natalie and Zack. The supporting cast includes CCH Pounder, Jamie Hector, Margarita Levieva, Ron Perlman, Ted Levine, and Patrick Fischler.

Many critics have highlighted Bardem’s performance as a standout aspect of the show. Several reviewers believe he successfully makes the iconic role his own while honoring previous interpretations of the character.

Writing for Heaven of Horror, Karina Adelgaard praised Bardem, stating, “As much as I loved Robert De Niro as Max Cady in the 1991 movie, Javier Bardem manages to completely make this character his own.” She also noted that the series contains subtle nods to earlier adaptations that longtime fans may appreciate.

Hunter Ingram of TheWrap echoed this sentiment, writing, “Bardem is giving a masterclass in reinterpreting a classic like Cady.” He added that the extended runtime allows the actor ample opportunities to delve into the character’s darker aspects.

Other critics have praised the show’s gripping storytelling. Peter Martin of ScreenAnarchy described the series as a world where trust is perpetually questioned, writing, “Lies, secrets, and repercussions run rampant in Cape Fear, where everyone’s motives are always suspect.”

Randy Myers of the San Jose Mercury News also shared positive feedback, calling the show “a breathless experience” that finds innovative ways to approach familiar material while still honoring its predecessors.

However, not all reviews have been favorable. Sean Burns of WBUR’s Arts & Culture provided a more critical perspective, labeling the series a “rotten score” review and suggesting that some character actions stretched credibility too far.

Despite this, the overall reaction has been positive. Critics from IndieWire, The Hollywood Reporter, Radio Times, Discussing Film, and several other outlets have commended the show’s atmosphere, direction, performances, and tension-filled storytelling.

With its impressive cast, dark premise, and favorable early reviews, ‘Cape Fear’ seems set to become one of Apple TV+’s most significant thriller releases of the year. Fans won’t have to wait much longer to see if the series lives up to the acclaim when all eight episodes premiere on June 5.
