Inside ‘The Boroughs’ Cast Discusses The Mother’s Secrets
A new featurette for Netflix’s science fiction series The Boroughs has provided fans with fresh insights into one of the show’s most enigmatic characters, known as Mother. The cast shared their thoughts directly, revealing various interpretations of who or what Mother truly is, indicating that even within the narrative, there is no consensus.
Geena Davis, who portrays Renee, described Mother in deeply emotional terms, stating, “Mother is the beating heart of this whole story.” This suggests that the character transcends the role of a mere villain or mystery, serving as the narrative’s core.
Alfre Woodard, who plays Judy Daniels, offered a psychological perspective, saying, “I think mother is our deep hyper-consciousness.” This implies that Mother may symbolize something internal within the human psyche, possibly related to memory, fear, or collective thought.
Davis also shared another intriguing interpretation, suggesting, “I think she might be an alien.” This aligns with the show’s science fiction elements, hinting that Mother may not be human at all.
Alfred Molina, who plays Sam Cooper, provided a more symbolic view, stating, “I kept thinking of her in terms of Mother Nature.” His comment indicates that Mother could embody natural forces, survival, or the cycle of life rather than representing a single physical entity.
Denis O’Hare, who plays Wally Baker, offered a simpler and more personal take, saying, “I think she is incredibly sweet. She has bright blue eyes.” This perspective stands out as it contrasts with the darker interpretations from other cast members, suggesting that Mother’s appearance may vary based on individual experiences.
Clarke Peters, who plays Art Daniels, made a more direct and unsettling remark, stating, “I think she is scary. And her babies are even scarier.” His words allude to a significant aspect of the mythology surrounding Mother, who is described in the series as having “children” linked to disturbing occurrences within the story’s setting.
Mother is depicted as an extraterrestrial entity imprisoned by Blaine and Anneliese Shaw, the leaders associated with the retirement community known as The Boroughs. She is said to possess abilities that can extend life for certain individuals while being kept under control. Additionally, she is connected to spider-like creatures referred to as her children, which contribute to the series’ darker science fiction themes.

The Boroughs is an American science fiction series created by Jeffrey Addiss and Will Matthews, with executive production by the Duffer Brothers. Set in a seemingly tranquil retirement community, the series reveals a hidden alien threat as residents begin to uncover strange and dangerous truths about their environment. The show premiered on Netflix on May 21 and follows a group of residents as they navigate these unsettling discoveries.
The featurette illustrates that the cast perceives Mother in various ways, ranging from the emotional center to an alien force to a symbolic concept. This diversity of interpretations enhances the mystery surrounding the character and suggests that the series intentionally leaves her true nature ambiguous.
