‘The Walking Dead: Dead City’ Season 3 Sneak Peek Shows Negan’s New Drinking Buddy

A new sneak peek unveiled at IGN Live 2026 has provided fans of ‘The Walking Dead: Dead City’ with an intriguing glimpse at one of the most captivating new characters set to appear in the third season. The clip focuses on Negan encountering Dillard, a solitary survivor played by Jimmi Simpson, and the interaction is both darkly humorous and deeply unsettling.

The preview begins with Negan arriving at Dillard’s bar, where he seems to be hiding from the walkers lurking nearby. Dillard, however, calmly reveals that he has somehow made the zombies safe to be around, treating them as regular customers, engaging in drinking games with the undead, and having personal conversations with them while serving Negan a drink. This scene establishes Dillard as one of the more memorably eccentric characters the franchise has introduced in years.

Simpson, who received an Emmy nomination for his role in ‘Westworld’ and is well-known for his portrayal of Liam McPoyle on ‘It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia’, plays a character that symbolizes a potentially dark future for Negan. This thematic depth is intentional, as showrunner Seth Hoffman has described the dynamic clearly, noting that Renata is a counterpart to Maggie, and Dillard serves as a counterpart to Negan. Negan enters the season at a crossroads, feeling disillusioned with people and wanting to isolate himself. Dillard, Hoffman explains, embodies the consequences of such isolation.

Hoffman has characterized Dillard as a man who has endured years of isolation at a significant psychological cost. The sneak peek vividly conveys that cost. As a lone survivor whose perspective sharply contrasts with the community-building mission of the season, Dillard serves as both a cautionary tale and a compelling foil, pushing Negan toward some of his most pivotal choices yet.

Lauren Cohan has also expressed enthusiasm about what Simpson brings to the show. In an interview with Bleeding Cool, Cohan described Dillard as a revelation and named him one of her favorite characters across all of ‘The Walking Dead’. Such praise from a series veteran carries significant weight, suggesting that Dillard will leave a lasting impact on the season rather than merely being a fleeting presence.

Simpson’s casting was announced in September 2025, alongside Aimee Garcia and later Raúl Castillo, with filming commencing in Fall 2025 in Boston, Massachusetts. Garcia joins as Renata, a charming natural leader whose infectious optimism makes it easy for her to connect with others, while Castillo plays Dr. Luis, a mentor figure for young Hershel.

‘The Walking Dead: Dead City’ Season 3 is set to premiere on July 26 on AMC and AMC+.
