Jason Momoa is no longer set to star in the live-action adaptation of ‘Helldivers’. This news was first reported by Deadline, which also reached out to both Momoa’s team and Sony Pictures for comments.

The film is based on the popular video game from Arrowhead Game Studios. It follows an elite group of soldiers known as Helldivers who engage in a large intergalactic war to protect “Super Earth” from dangerous alien threats, all while working as a team in extreme combat scenarios.

Currently, the movie is in development under PlayStation Productions and Sony Pictures, with a theatrical release scheduled for November 10, 2027.

Justin Lin remains attached to direct the project. He is renowned for his work on several ‘Fast and Furious’ films, including ‘Fast Five’ and ‘Fast & Furious 6’. Lin also produced ‘Fast X’, where Jason Momoa portrayed the villain Dante. His diverse portfolio includes smaller projects like ‘Annapolis’ and directing episodes of popular television shows such as ‘Community’ and ‘True Detective’.

Despite Momoa’s departure, he continues to thrive in major franchises. He recently starred in ‘A Minecraft Movie’, another video game adaptation that achieved significant box office success, earning over 424 million dollars in the United States and more than 500 million dollars globally, according to Box Office Mojo.

Momoa is also expected to return for the sequel to ‘A Minecraft Movie’. He remains involved in upcoming projects within the ‘Aquaman’ franchise and the final ‘Fast and Furious’ installment titled ‘Fast Forever’. Additionally, he is set to appear in ‘Dune: Part Three’, which is scheduled for release on December 18.

In earlier interviews with Entertainment Weekly, Momoa expressed his strong connection to the character Lobo in the upcoming ‘Supergirl’ film, stating, “I just think I’m the right person to play the role,” and adding that he felt “born to do it.” He described Lobo as a character he has always admired, saying, “If we’re going to typecast me in anything, let’s put me in Lobo.”

The ‘Helldivers’ movie was first announced in early 2025 during Sony’s CES presentation, marking a significant step in Sony’s push into video game adaptations. In December 2025, Justin Lin was officially announced as the director, with screenwriter Gary Dauberman attached to the script. A few months later, in February 2026, Jason Momoa was confirmed as the lead star.

With Momoa stepping away, the film will continue its development without its originally announced lead actor. Sony has yet to announce a replacement or whether the role will be recast.

Despite this casting change, the project is still progressing. It remains a key part of Sony’s long-term strategy to expand its video game properties into major movie franchises, following the success of titles like ‘Uncharted’ and ‘Gran Turismo’.

With a high-profile director still attached and a dedicated fan base supporting the game, ‘Helldivers’ is expected to remain one of Sony’s major upcoming releases, even as it navigates this significant casting shift early in production.
