‘Obsession’ Achieves $200 Million Milestone at the Box Office
Original films seldom reach the $200 million milestone at the domestic box office these days, but ‘Obsession’ has successfully crossed that threshold. According to box office reports, the Focus Features release has surpassed $200 million in the United States and Canada as it enters its sixth weekend in theaters.
Such performance is rare in the current film landscape, where franchises and sequels typically dominate ticket sales. Over the last decade, only a handful of original films have achieved this feat. One notable benchmark was Pixar’s ‘Coco,’ which reached $200 million domestically back in 2017. Following that, the next significant original success to hit this milestone was Ryan Coogler’s ‘Sinners,’ which concluded its domestic run at nearly $280 million after debuting with $48 million.
‘Obsession’ entered the market in a different context compared to those films. It wasn’t associated with a major superhero franchise and didn’t open with a blockbuster debut weekend, starting instead with around $17.1 million domestically. This opening typically suggests a solid but limited theatrical run.
However, the film’s trajectory shifted rapidly as audiences began to respond positively. Premiering at TIFF, it garnered strong early reviews, which helped generate word of mouth following its release. Additionally, it received an A- CinemaScore, an unusually high rating for a horror film, placing it alongside well-received titles like ‘The Conjuring’ and ‘Get Out.’
Post-opening weekend, ‘Obsession’ did something uncommon for most films. Instead of experiencing a sharp decline, its weekly totals either remained steady or increased in some instances. Each subsequent weekend met or exceeded expectations, indicating that audience interest grew rather than diminished over time.

Currently, ‘Obsession’ ranks among the top-performing films of the year in North America. It sits within the top five domestically and has also surpassed the $300 million mark globally. This worldwide total places it ahead of several major studio releases, including ‘Scream 7,’ ‘Mortal Kombat II,’ and ‘Wuthering Heights,’ according to the same box office reports.
Within the horror genre, the film now joins a select group of high-earning titles that have crossed $200 million domestically. This list includes Andy Muschietti’s ‘It’ films and William Friedkin’s ‘The Exorcist,’ which remains one of the most successful horror movies in history when adjusted for inflation.
Although it didn’t start as a blockbuster on paper, ‘Obsession’ has become a prime example in recent years of how strong reviews and audience reactions can transform a modest opening into a significant theatrical success.
