DC Studios has had a varied history in getting audiences to engage with its rebooted universe, but ‘Lanterns’ has swiftly become the standout success fans were hoping for. The HBO series has spent the last month generating a level of buzz that few comic book adaptations achieve beyond their initial premiere weekend.

The show centers on Lantern legends Hal Jordan and rookie John Stewart, two intergalactic officers drawn into a dark, earth-based murder mystery with cosmic connections. Created by Chris Mundy, with Damon Lindelof and comic book legend Tom King among its executive producers, the series has shifted from space battles to a more grounded procedural tone that has resonated with both critics and casual viewers.

Aaron Pierre, who portrays John Stewart alongside Kyle Chandler’s Hal Jordan, is now sharing how he’s processing the wave of attention. In an exclusive interview, Pierre emphasized that while he doesn’t often scroll through social media, the show’s expanding cultural impact has still reached him in various ways.

“I’m rarely on the internet, but I do feel it outside of the context of the internet, and I feel an immense gratitude,” Pierre told ScreenRant. Instead of focusing on the scale of online discussions, memes, initial reactions, and theories that have intensified with each new episode, Pierre framed his response around appreciation.

He went on to express deep gratitude for the opportunity, recognizing that landing a role in a franchise of this magnitude is something many actors aspire to, while sharing his hope to continue working at this level for years to come.

This gratitude comes as ‘Lanterns’ has established itself as a true ratings phenomenon for HBO and HBO Max. The series premiered on August 16 to 9.3 million global viewers within its first three days, including 6.6 million in the United States, making it one of the platform’s top five series premieres and the biggest launch for a DC Studios series on HBO Max to date.

The momentum only increased from there. By its third episode, titled “OutKast,” which explored John Stewart’s backstory, the show had reached 10 million global viewers and 7 million in the U.S. within its first three days, setting a new series high and surpassing its own premiere numbers. The pilot episode alone has since attracted over 20 million total viewers worldwide. ‘Lanterns’ also debuted with an audience score of 89% on Rotten Tomatoes, indicating that the enthusiasm Pierre describes is not limited to a vocal online minority.

Pierre’s journey to this role has been years in the making. Known for his acclaimed performance in ‘The Underground Railroad’ and for leading Netflix’s ‘Rebel Ridge,’ along with roles in ‘Mufasa: The Lion King,’ Pierre and Chandler were officially announced as the show’s leads back in October 2024, following what DC Studios head James Gunn described as a lengthy and rigorous audition process.

That build-up seems to have paid off, both critically and commercially. With outlets ranging from Variety to Rolling Stone praising the show’s tone and lead performances, and with viewership continuing to rise well beyond the typical premiere drop-off, ‘Lanterns’ has quickly become one of the strongest arguments for DC Studios’ current approach to franchise television.

Pierre’s grounded, gratitude-focused response aligns perfectly with a project that seems intent on letting its execution speak for itself rather than relying on franchise spectacle. For an actor who claims to barely engage with the online discourse, the sentiment is still clear: he understands how rare a moment like this truly is.
