‘Minecraft Movie 2’ Is Set to Be a Bigger Adventure, Says Director Jared Hess

The universe of ‘Minecraft’ is gearing up for another expansion. Following the immense success of ‘A Minecraft Movie’, a sequel titled ‘A Minecraft Movie Squared’ is officially in the works, with director Jared Hess hinting that this next installment will offer a much grander adventure.

The first film was a box-office sensation, raking in approximately $961 million globally and establishing itself as one of the most successful video game adaptations to date. This success paved the way for a sequel, with Warner Bros. and the creative team diving into a new storyline set within the iconic block-filled realm.

In ‘A Minecraft Movie’, viewers followed Jack Black’s character Steve as he teamed up with Garrett “The Garbage Man” Garrison, portrayed by Jason Momoa, alongside new friends Natalie, Dawn, and Henry. Together, they ventured into the Overworld to safeguard creativity from the nefarious plans of Malgosha.

The sequel promises to bring back beloved characters while also introducing new ones and expanding the narrative. Jack Black and Jason Momoa are anticipated to reprise their roles, with Matt Berry appearing in a new character role after previously voicing the villager Nitwit. Additionally, the sequel will feature Alex, the well-known female playable character from the ‘Minecraft’ games, voiced by Kirsten Dunst.

In an interview with Collider, director Jared Hess and Mojang executive Kayleen Walters shared insights into what fans can expect from the sequel. Hess noted that the new film will take the characters on a larger and more thrilling journey.

“We’re taking Steve and Alex and going on this epic mission back into the Overworld. We’re definitely expanding their abilities and things that they have to do to get the job done.”

Hess further elaborated that the sequel will explore uncharted territories within the ‘Minecraft’ universe, showcasing locations previously unseen by fans. The aim is to create a follow-up that feels more expansive while maintaining the fun and creativity that endeared the first film to audiences.

A significant focus for the sequel will be Alex’s role in the storyline. Given her status as one of the most recognizable characters in ‘Minecraft’, the filmmakers are committed to ensuring she plays a crucial part in the movie.

Walters emphasized that Alex is a vital part of ‘Minecraft’s’ legacy, and the team aims to ensure her cinematic representation resonates with the millions of players familiar with her character.

While the first film garnered mixed reviews from critics, it was well-received by audiences. Currently, it holds a 47% critics score on Rotten Tomatoes, yet boasts an 84% audience score, indicating that many fans enjoyed witnessing ‘Minecraft’ come to life on the big screen.

The film also ranked among the top-grossing films of 2025, demonstrating a continued interest in more ‘Minecraft’ narratives.

With a broader world, new characters, and Steve and Alex embarking on another mission, ‘A Minecraft Movie Squared’ is poised to elevate the franchise to new heights. The sequel is currently slated for a theatrical release on July 23, 2027.
