Prime Video’s ‘RoboCop’ Reboot Reveals First Plot Details and Filming Date
‘RoboCop’ is set for a revival on both the big screen and television, as Prime Video develops a new series inspired by the iconic sci-fi franchise. After a period of limited information, recent reports indicate that the project is gaining momentum with a potential filming date and initial plot details.
According to a report from World of Reel, the ‘RoboCop’ reboot series is slated to commence a six-month production in Vancouver starting next January. The report also suggests that director James Wan, renowned for his work in the horror genre, may direct several episodes of the forthcoming show. Wan is already attached to the project as an executive producer.
This new series is being developed by Amazon MGM Studios and aims to reimagine the universe first brought to life in Paul Verhoeven’s 1987 ‘RoboCop’ film. The original movie became a sci-fi classic due to its unique blend of action, dark humor, and social commentary.
Reviving ‘RoboCop’ is no small feat. Previous attempts to reboot Verhoeven’s vision, such as the 2012 remake of ‘Total Recall’ and the 2014 ‘RoboCop’ film, received mixed reviews from audiences and struggled to capture the essence of the original films.
Prime Video is now looking to create a fresh interpretation of the franchise by steering the narrative in a new direction. Rather than simply retelling the story of Alex Murphy, the new series will reportedly introduce a character named Marc Kyle.
Based on details shared by World of Reel, Kyle will have a different origin than the original RoboCop. Instead of beginning as a police officer, he will reportedly be a soldier who dies in combat. Following his death, he is transformed into a cybernetic law enforcement officer.
The most significant connection to the original story is that Alex Murphy may still play a role in this new iteration. Reports indicate that Kyle could eventually operate under Murphy’s mentorship, establishing a link between the classic character and the new protagonist.
It remains uncertain whether Peter Weller, who portrayed Alex Murphy in the original ‘RoboCop’ films, will reprise his role for the series. Having Weller involved could help bridge the gap for longtime fans, but no official casting announcements have been made.
The series has enlisted Peter Ocko as writer, executive producer, and showrunner. Ocko is recognized for creating and contributing to various television projects, including ‘Lodge 49.’

The ‘RoboCop’ reboot was initially announced in 2023, but updates on the project have been sparse until now. This news follows Prime Video’s decision to halt plans for another classic sci-fi revival, ‘Stargate,’ and instead focus on the ‘RoboCop’ franchise.
The upcoming series is anticipated to offer a fresh perspective on the character while maintaining ties to the original films. With James Wan’s involvement and a new storyline in the works, Prime Video seems to be aiming for a version of ‘RoboCop’ that resonates with both longtime fans and a new generation of viewers.
No official release date has been announced yet, but if the reported production schedule holds true, more information could surface once filming commences.
