Matt Damon describes his experience working on Christopher Nolan’s upcoming film ‘The Odyssey’ as unlike any other in his career. Despite his status as one of Hollywood’s leading stars, Damon emphasizes that he did not receive any special treatment on set, enduring the same tough conditions as the rest of the cast and crew.

In an exclusive interview with PEOPLE, Damon conveyed that the production felt like a true team effort, with everyone facing similar challenges. Portraying Odysseus in the film, he noted that the experience resembled a genuine journey rather than a typical movie shoot.

“There was no special treatment,” Damon told PEOPLE. “If you’re out on a boat in the middle of the ocean and you get caught in a storm, you get wet with everybody else.”

He further revealed that even director Christopher Nolan faced the same harsh filming conditions. According to Damon, everyone was treated equally, regardless of their role on the project.

“Nobody’s getting a hot beverage that you’re not getting. You know what I mean? Everybody’s on equal footing, including Chris, who was just as cold and wet as everybody else throughout the whole thing,” Damon explained.

For Damon, this shared experience fostered a stronger bond among all involved. He believes the difficult production process brought the cast and crew closer together as they navigated the same challenges.

“I do feel really bonded with everybody who was on that movie, cast and crew, because it was so challenging for everyone,” Damon said.

‘The Odyssey’ is based on Homer’s renowned ancient Greek poem, chronicling the long journey of Odysseus as he strives to return home after the Trojan War. The narrative explores his struggles over a decade filled with battles, mythical creatures, and insurmountable obstacles.

Directed by Christopher Nolan, the film boasts an impressive cast, including Zendaya, Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, Robert Pattinson, Lupita Nyong’o, Charlize Theron, and John Leguizamo alongside Damon.

Damon said that filming required maximum effort from everyone involved. He described the process as more akin to an expedition than a conventional movie production.

“Every single day of filming that movie stands out because it felt more like an expedition than a film,” Damon remarked.

He elaborated that creating the film demanded complete dedication from everyone behind the scenes. The scale and difficulty of the production meant that success was only possible through teamwork.

“It really required every single person on that cast and crew to just completely max out day after day after day,” Damon added.

The experience left Damon feeling thankful for being part of such a large and demanding project. He believes audiences will appreciate the effort that went into making the film when it hits theaters.

“I came away from that experience just feeling really lucky and grateful that I got to be a part of a team like that,” Damon expressed.

He also commended the dedication of everyone involved, asserting that the movie would not have been possible without the commitment of the entire production team.

‘The Odyssey’ is scheduled to premiere in theaters on July 17, bringing Nolan’s adaptation of the classic Greek tale to the big screen. Based on Damon’s insights, the film was not only a significant cinematic challenge but also a memorable experience for all who worked on it.
