Bethany Antonia shares that one of the most significant challenges of portraying Baela Targaryen in ‘House of the Dragon’ has been uncovering the character’s true identity beyond her connections with others.

In a recent interview with Pop Base, the actress revealed that the toughest aspect was grasping what motivates the young Targaryen when she is not merely a supporting character in someone else’s narrative.

Antonia noted that Baela has frequently been depicted through the perspectives of those around her. Whether it involves safeguarding her family, supporting her allies, or adhering to the expectations tied to her lineage, the character has often lacked the opportunity to pursue her own aspirations.

“What was challenging was figuring out what her position would be if she wasn’t associated to certain characters. What does she stand for?” Antonia told Pop Base.

The actress expressed her desire to delve into Baela as an individual, showcasing her evolution from a young woman into someone who must make her own decisions.

“So far, all we’ve seen of Baela is her doing what other people expect of her or trying to protect other people,” she said.

Antonia added that the new season allowed her to explore facets of Baela that viewers had not previously witnessed.

“I think this season I was sort of forced to confront the fact that, as an individual, we haven’t seen her do anything for herself or born out of her own interests or desires,” the actress explained.

Baela’s journey becomes even more intricate following the tragic events of the Dance of the Dragons. As a pivotal member of Team Black, she must navigate loss while assuming greater responsibilities.

One of the most heart-wrenching moments for the character occurs during the Battle of the Gullet. Baela fights alongside her betrothed, Jacaerys Velaryon, as the battle devolves into chaos for the Blacks. During the conflict, Jace sacrifices himself while attempting to protect others, resulting in his tragic death.

Baela witnesses the loss of not only her future husband but also one of her closest allies. This moment alters her role in the war and elevates her position within the Targaryen family.

After the battle, Baela is the one who returns Jace’s body to Dragonstone. Riding her dragon Moondancer, she brings back the remains of Rhaenyra Targaryen’s heir and delivers the devastating news to his family.

This tragedy strikes another heavy blow for Rhaenyra, who has already endured significant suffering during the civil war. Baela’s actions during this time highlight her strength and loyalty, while also revealing the emotional burden she carries.

Later, Baela becomes more intertwined with the remaining Velaryon and Targaryen leaders. She collaborates with her grandfather Corlys Velaryon and other members of House Velaryon as they confront the aftermath of the battle and the ongoing war.

For Antonia, the challenge of portraying Baela extends beyond merely depicting her as a warrior or a member of a powerful family. It involves illustrating a young woman striving to understand herself while bearing the expectations that accompany her heritage.

“We’re seeing her sort of go into the same territory as we did when we first met her mom and thinking of her as an adult, what that means, and the kind of decisions she has to make going forward,” Antonia stated.

As ‘House of the Dragon’ progresses, Baela’s narrative seems to be evolving into a new chapter where she is no longer just a part of someone else’s journey. She is emerging as a key figure with her own choices, ambitions, and future to shape.
