Maria Sten’s ‘Neagley’ First Look Reveals Dark Mission in Chicago’s Underworld
Maria Sten’s Frances Neagley is stepping into the limelight with her own narrative. After gaining popularity as a supporting character in Prime Video’s hit series ‘Reacher’, Neagley is set to star in her own spinoff series that will delve into her past, skills, and the secrets she has kept hidden.
Entertainment Weekly has unveiled the first look at Neagley and engaged in discussions with Sten, along with showrunners Nick Santora and Nick Wootton, about what viewers can anticipate from the upcoming series.
The series will follow Neagley as she operates as a private investigator in Chicago. Her life takes a dark turn when she learns that a close friend from her past has died under suspicious circumstances. Determined to uncover the truth, Neagley utilizes everything she learned during her time with Jack Reacher and the 110 Special Investigators to reveal a dangerous secret.
While Neagley has always been portrayed as a strong and dependable partner for Reacher, the new series will focus on her character outside of assisting others. According to Sten, this was one of the most thrilling aspects of centering the story around Neagley.
“What does Neagley feel like and look like when she is in her own world, not just coming to save Reacher’s ass?” Sten shared with Entertainment Weekly. The actress explained that the series will provide viewers with a deeper understanding of Neagley’s personality, struggles, and history. A significant aspect of her story involves exploring the trauma that has shaped her, including her fear of physical contact, known as haphephobia.
“Neagley carries this huge mystery around her, about where her trauma comes from [and] where her haphephobia comes from,” Sten remarked. She expressed excitement about how the show will delve into these facets of Neagley’s life.
The new series will also introduce a fresh ensemble of characters who will accompany Neagley on her mission. The cast features Greyston Holt as Detective Hudson Riley, Adeline Rudolph as Renee Birdwhistle, Jasper Jones as Keno, Matthew Del Negro as Pierce Woodrow, and Damon Herriman as Lawrence Cole.
Unlike ‘Reacher’, which follows Jack Reacher as he travels from place to place, ‘Neagley’ will establish a more permanent setting with characters who can continue to appear in future seasons. Santora explained that creating this new environment was crucial in developing the spinoff.
“We had to think of a world and characters that would be beloved enough that audiences would wanna see them season after season after season because Neagley is not a wanderlust like her pal Reacher,” Santora told Entertainment Weekly.
Alan Ritchson will also make a guest appearance, reprising his role as Jack Reacher. However, the spotlight will remain on Neagley and her own journey.
Lee Child, the author behind the ‘Reacher’ novels, has praised Maria Sten’s portrayal of the character. He previously told Entertainment Weekly that Sten has completely transformed his perception of Neagley.
“Maria Sten is just the surprise star of the show to me,” Child remarked, adding that when he envisions Neagley now, he sees Sten in the role.
‘Neagley’ is set to premiere on Prime Video on September 16, following the return of ‘Reacher’ season 4 on August 12. This new series will offer fans a chance to explore a different side of one of the franchise’s most cherished characters.
