‘Yellowstone’ Creator Taylor Sheridan Discusses His Key Conditions for Paramount’s Success
Taylor Sheridan has emerged as a leading force in television, transforming Paramount’s TV lineup into one of the most significant success stories of the past decade. However, before his shows became major hits, Sheridan established clear guidelines regarding how he wanted to operate.
In a recent appearance on The Bill Simmons Podcast, as reported by Deadline, Sheridan shared the conditions he set before embarking on his successful creative collaboration with Paramount. The writer and producer emphasized that having full creative control was a crucial aspect of any agreement he made.
Sheridan is recognized for crafting his own scripts and developing narratives in his distinctive style. Unlike many television creators who rely on large writing teams, Sheridan has often opted for a more personal approach by writing much of his content himself. This freedom became a vital component of his success, but it was something he had to insist upon early in his career.
Before transitioning to television, Sheridan established his reputation through film. He wrote three interconnected movies that explored similar themes and characters, creating what many fans regard as a spiritual trilogy. One of those films, Hell or High Water, earned Sheridan an Oscar nomination for Best Original Screenplay.
Following his film success, Sheridan ventured into television and forged a strong partnership with Paramount. This collaboration led to the creation of some of the biggest shows in recent years, including ‘Yellowstone’, ‘Landman’, ‘Tulsa King’, ‘Mayor of Kingstown’, and ‘Lioness’.
Discussing his creative process on The Bill Simmons Podcast, Sheridan noted that he was never preoccupied with awards or impressing critics. Instead, he aimed to tell stories that resonate with everyday viewers.
“This is not a democracy. There’s no committee. You’re going to pay me, and you’re going to give me a bunch of money, and I’m going to deliver you these shows,” Sheridan stated. He also characterized himself as someone who narrates stories about ordinary people and experiences that audiences can relate to.
“I’m pretty common, and I’m going to tell stories that common people are going to understand. That’s most of America,” he added.
This approach has evidently paid off. Sheridan’s ‘Yellowstone’ universe has become a significant television phenomenon, with the original series recognized as one of the most discussed dramas on TV. The franchise has expanded with shows like ‘1883’ and ‘1923’, while additional projects related to the ‘Yellowstone’ world are in development.
Beyond ‘Yellowstone’, Sheridan has contributed to a robust lineup of successful Paramount+ series. His current and upcoming projects include new seasons of ‘Landman’, ‘Mayor of Kingstown’, ‘Tulsa King’, ‘Lioness’, and ‘The Madison’. He has also remained engaged as an executive producer on various ‘Yellowstone’-related initiatives.
According to Collider, Sheridan’s contributions have significantly aided Paramount+ in its growth over the past several years. His shows have consistently drawn large audiences and helped position the platform as a formidable competitor in the streaming landscape.
However, after nearly a decade with Paramount, Sheridan is now gearing up for a new creative partnership with NBCUniversal. While his next chapter will take him in a different direction, the impact of his tenure at Paramount is already evident.
By insisting on creative freedom and concentrating on narratives that resonate with a broad audience, Sheridan has crafted a successful formula that has transformed the landscape of modern television dramas.
