‘The Invite’ Director Olivia Wilde Shares the Unique Pronunciation of Her Real Name
Olivia Wilde has shared an intriguing detail about her birth name and the reasons behind her decision to change it for her acting career. The star of ‘Don’t Worry Darling’ recently discussed the unusual spelling of her original surname and the challenges she faced growing up with it.
In a recent episode of the Armchair Expert with Dax Shepard podcast, Wilde revealed that her real last name is Cockburn, but its pronunciation may surprise many. She clarified that it is actually pronounced “Coburn.”
“I’ll tell you something — and there’s no way you would know this — it’s pronounced ‘Coburn.’ Which I want you to imagine being a kid, when you’re… Because it’s spelled ‘Cockburn!’” Wilde explained.
The actress noted that having such a distinctive surname was not always easy during her childhood. Due to its spelling, she often became the target of jokes from her peers. However, Wilde learned early on that embracing humor about her name helped her cope with the attention.
She likened her experience to the narrative of the song ‘A Boy Named Sue,’ suggesting that having an unusual name contributed to her character development.
“It is very much like ‘[A] Boy Named Sue,’ you know what I mean? Like, it’s character building,” Wilde remarked.
Wilde believes that having a standout name can become an integral part of one’s identity. While she does not condone bullying, she admitted that she eventually found humor in the situation and learned not to take every joke to heart.
When Dax Shepard inquired about any bullying she faced due to her surname, Wilde shared that responding with humor made the situation more manageable. Instead of allowing comments to upset her, she embraced the uniqueness of her name.
Wilde also mentioned her younger brother, Charlie, who shares the same surname. She humorously questioned whether it was more challenging for her or her brother to bear the name Cockburn. “I don’t know, have we? I think having the last name looks like Cockburn in any city in any decade…” she joked.
Shepard noted that while society evolves, a name like Cockburn would likely still draw attention and laughter. He found it somewhat comforting that some things remain universally amusing, regardless of the passage of time.
Wilde concurred, stating that experiences like these can impart valuable lessons during youth. She explained that learning to laugh at herself helped her become more at ease with something beyond her control.
Ultimately, the actress chose the stage name Olivia Wilde as a tribute to Oscar Wilde, the renowned Irish writer and poet. She adopted this name while pursuing her acting career, crafting the identity that audiences now recognize worldwide.
Over the years, Wilde has gained fame for her roles in films such as ‘Tron: Legacy,’ ‘Booksmart,’ and ‘Don’t Worry Darling,’ along with her work as a director and producer. While many fans know her by her Hollywood name, her recent podcast appearance provided a rare glimpse into the story behind her original surname and the personal experiences that shaped her.
