Disney is set to adapt another beloved animated property into live action. The company has officially begun developing a live-action reboot of ‘The Last Kids on Earth’, a series that was previously adapted as an animated show on Netflix.

As reported by The Hollywood Reporter, Disney+ and Disney Channel have ordered a pilot episode for this new live-action version. The project will be written and produced by Chad Fiveash and James Stoteraux, known for their work on ‘The Vampire Diaries’. Kevin Tancharoen, who directed episodes of Marvel’s ‘Agents of SHIELD’, is also on board to direct the pilot.

This move aligns with a significant trend in Hollywood, where studios are increasingly transforming successful animated movies and shows into live-action projects. While this trend has gained momentum in recent years, adaptations have been occurring for decades, with earlier examples including films like ‘The Flintstones’ and ‘Casper’.

Disney has emerged as a leader in this approach, achieving major success with live-action adaptations of animated classics. Films like ‘Lilo & Stitch’ and ‘The Lion King’ have become massive hits, demonstrating that audiences are eager to see familiar stories reimagined.

Netflix has also embraced this trend with projects like ‘Wednesday’, its live-action take on ‘The Addams Family’, and plans for a live-action ‘Scooby-Doo’ series. Now, Disney aims for ‘The Last Kids on Earth’ to evolve into another long-running franchise.

‘The Last Kids on Earth’ began as a book series created by Max Brallier, featuring illustrations by Douglas Holgate. The first book was released in 2015, introducing readers to Jack Sullivan, a 13-year-old orphan navigating a monster-filled world after a zombie outbreak devastates his hometown of Wakefield, Massachusetts.

The series quickly gained popularity, becoming a New York Times bestseller and expanding into a larger franchise. It includes ten main books, an interactive Survival Guide, three standalone books, and a graphic novel adaptation.

This extensive source material provides Disney with the opportunity to create a long-running series if the live-action reboot succeeds. The storyline has enough content to potentially span many seasons, allowing for adaptations of the books over an extended period.

Netflix previously released an animated version of ‘The Last Kids on Earth’, which ran for three seasons and included a special episode. However, that adaptation only covered part of the overall story, leaving many events from the books unexplored.

The new live-action version could provide fans with the opportunity to witness more of Jack’s adventures and see the complete story come to life. However, one significant challenge will be maintaining the young cast at the appropriate ages.

As seen with series like ‘Stranger Things’, child actors can age quickly during production. Since the characters in ‘The Last Kids on Earth’ are intended to be children, a lengthy production schedule could pose challenges if the series becomes a success.

Currently, Disney is only moving forward with a pilot episode instead of ordering a full season. This means that the first episode will be crucial in determining whether the project continues.

The pilot will not only evaluate the story and characters but also assess how well the young cast fits into their roles. If Disney decides to proceed, the series could become another significant live-action franchise based on an animated property. However, first, ‘The Last Kids on Earth’ must prove it can successfully transition from animation to live action.
