A significant shift is on the horizon for Sullivan’s Crossing, as one of the show’s lead stars has addressed this change. In a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, Morgan Kohan shared her thoughts on Scott Patterson’s departure from the series, describing it as a substantial shift for both the storyline and the characters moving forward.
Sullivan’s Crossing, adapted from Robyn Carr’s book series, centers around Maggie Sullivan, a successful neurosurgeon from Boston whose life unravels due to legal issues. She returns to her hometown to rebuild her life while reconnecting with her father and her past. The series combines personal drama with heartfelt family narratives, earning a dedicated fanbase since its premiere.
Scott Patterson’s exit marks one of the most significant changes the series has encountered. He portrayed a pivotal character who played a crucial role in Maggie’s emotional journey. Kohan, who takes on the role of Maggie, noted that both the cast and the audience understood that his departure would profoundly impact the show’s direction.
In her interview, Kohan emphasized that while the transition is challenging, it also paves the way for fresh storylines and new characters. She expressed optimism about the series evolving and assured fans that there is much to anticipate in season 4.
Kohan articulated her perspective on the show’s future, stating, “We all knew that it was going to change things and that the audience would definitely have a reaction to that. But I really do think no matter what, when there’s going to be such a big change in a show that’s so loved in the way that it is, it does open up so many new opportunities. And I love so many of the characters that we get to bring in this season.”
She also mentioned that the absence of Patterson’s character will significantly impact Maggie. According to her, Maggie loses a vital source of guidance and emotional support. Although the character will not be physically present in the new season, the show will still recognize his influence on the storyline.
Kohan clarified that the series will not overlook his impact, explaining that the character remains a significant presence in Maggie’s life even after leaving the show. However, she refrained from disclosing how exactly the series will continue to incorporate him into the narrative.
Behind the scenes, various explanations have emerged regarding Patterson’s departure. Showrunner Roma Roth characterized it as part of a planned character arc and hinted that there might be a possibility for his return in the future if the storyline permits.
Patterson, however, has provided a different account of the situation. He stated that his exit was due to creative disagreements behind the scenes. He remarked, “The creative differences were becoming untenable, and I just sadly realized that the show was not something that I could agree to continue.”
Despite the controversy surrounding his departure, production is moving ahead. Season 4 of Sullivan’s Crossing is now available for streaming on Netflix, and the narrative is set to continue evolving with new characters and shifting dynamics at its core.
