Taylor Sheridan recently made his debut on The Howard Stern Show, where he unveiled the secrets behind his impressive casting success in television. During the interview, he explained how he manages to attract top Hollywood talent even before a script is drafted.

Sheridan’s approach flips the conventional Hollywood casting process on its head. He often secures lead actors prior to writing a script, developing narratives with specific characters in mind. He shared examples of this method with Harrison Ford and Helen Mirren for ‘Landman,’ as well as Billy Bob Thornton and Michelle Pfeiffer for ‘The Madison.’

Before writing ‘The Madison,’ Sheridan met with Pfeiffer to discuss his vision, stating he was “literally writing it for her.”

A highlight of the interview was Sheridan’s discussion about Sam Elliott, who initially expressed his dislike for ‘Yellowstone,’ referring to it as a “cowboy soap opera.” Sheridan acknowledged this and presented a different vision: “This is gonna be the grown-up me. I have a story I want to tell. Here’s the story, and here’s the arc of your character.” Elliott was impressed, replying, “That’s beautiful. I’d love to do that.”

Sheridan praised Elliott as “one of the best we’ve ever had” and described him as “one of the most delightful human beings I have ever met, and a wizard of an actor.” At 81, Elliott continues to collaborate with Sheridan in ‘Landman,’ which is distinct from the ‘Yellowstone’ universe.

Sheridan also highlighted Zoe Saldaña’s role in ‘Special Ops: Lioness,’ noting she was his first choice for the character, which he described as the female equivalent of James Bond. This insight showcases the depth of his character development before casting decisions are made. The show, which premiered in 2023, has become one of Paramount+’s top-rated originals and has already been renewed for a third season.

Sheridan’s appearance on The Howard Stern Show was a rare glimpse into the mind of a creator who has built a successful career largely away from the media spotlight. This interview marked only his second major long-form discussion in recent years, coinciding with the release of his first book, ‘How to Not Die in Prison.’ This suggests that Sheridan is entering a more open phase of his career.

The creative process he described is both practical and personal, rooted in relationships established before filming begins. This may explain why actors who have numerous options continue to choose to work with him. When a story is crafted specifically for you, it often shines through.
