‘Dutton Ranch‘ has just concluded a thrilling first season, and Paramount+ is gearing up for more excitement. The drama, featuring Kelly Reilly and Cole Hauser, received a season two renewal even before the first season finished airing, igniting a wave of speculation among ‘Yellowstone’ fans about the future of Beth and Rip.

With a surprising showrunner change, record-breaking viewership, and a finale that left many questions unanswered in Rio Paloma, there’s plenty to discuss. Here’s everything we currently know about ‘Dutton Ranch’ season two.

Paramount+ officially renewed ‘Dutton Ranch’ for its second season on June 24, a decision made before the first season reached its finale. This renewal followed the series’ rebranding earlier that year, when it transitioned from its longer working title to simply ‘Dutton Ranch’.

The renewal was hardly surprising given the impressive numbers. Paramount reported that the show attracted 12.9 million viewers globally in its first week, marking it as the biggest original series premiere in Paramount+ history, and it also topped the Nielsen streaming charts for the week of May 11.

Jane Wiseman, Head of Originals at Paramount+, celebrated this milestone, calling Beth and Rip one of television’s most iconic duos and expressing enthusiasm about expanding the show’s universe for subscribers worldwide. Matt Thunell, President of Paramount Television Studios, echoed this sentiment, emphasizing how the show builds on beloved characters while establishing its own identity.

Shortly after the renewal, Paramount announced a significant change behind the scenes. Benjamin Cavell has been appointed as the showrunner for the second season, succeeding original creator Chad Feehan.

Feehan’s exit occurred earlier than many fans realized, as he stepped away from the project before the series premiered, reportedly due to tensions with cast members, Taylor Sheridan, and 101 Studios head David C. Glasser. The specifics of that fallout remain largely unexplained.

Cavell’s background should reassure fans; he has previously worked on shows like Justified, SEAL Team, and The Stand, and is the creator of the Stephen King adaptation The Institute.

Reilly and Hauser addressed the transition in an interview with the Hollywood Reporter, with Hauser noting that changes in showrunners are common. Reilly mentioned that the cast concluded season one beautifully with Feehan, describing the experience as challenging yet rewarding, typical of any worthwhile endeavor.

Season one followed Beth and Rip as they left Montana to start anew on a Texas ranch, only to clash with the Jackson family and their expansive 10 Petal Ranch empire. The series is set and filmed in the fictional South Texas city of Rio Paloma, a significant shift from the Montana backdrop that characterized ‘Yellowstone’.

Tensions escalated quickly leading into the finale. In the June 19 episode, Rob-Will crashed a celebration for the 10 Petal Ranch’s 190th birthday, demanding that Beulah name him the next owner over Joaquin, a shocking claim that sent Joaquin storming out, vowing revenge.

Jai Courtney, who portrays the unpredictable Rob-Will, shared insights into his character’s future. He told ‘TVLine’ that Rob-Will is someone not to be underestimated, emphasizing that despite his struggles, he should not be dismissed simply because he was introduced as a flawed character.

Regarding the overarching narrative, Reilly hinted that the writers have a clear direction for season two. She mentioned to the ‘Hollywood Reporter’ that they have ideas based on the season one conclusion, and while she couldn’t reveal specifics, she expressed excitement about the story’s progression and confirmed they already know how it begins.

The main cast is expected to return for season two. The series stars Annette Bening as Beulah Jackson, the formidable owner of the 10 Petal Ranch, Ed Harris as Everett McKinney, a veteran-turned-veterinarian with a romantic past with Beulah, Finn Little as Carter, Beth and Rip’s adopted son, and Natalie Alyn Lind as Oreana Jackson, Beulah’s granddaughter and Carter’s love interest.

Other key players include Jai Courtney as Rob-Will Jackson, Beulah’s ambitious son, Juan Pablo Raba as Joaquin Jackson Reyes, Beulah’s adopted son and family fixer, and J.R. Villarreal as Azul Ramos.

Kelly Reilly and Cole Hauser continue to be the heart of the series, and their off-screen roles are expanding as they will also serve as executive producers while reprising their roles as Beth Dutton and Rip Wheeler.

Interestingly, ‘Dutton Ranch’ is not the only project thriving in the Sheridan universe. It is the second spinoff from ‘Yellowstone’, following ‘Marshals’, which features Luke Grimes as Kayce Dutton leading U.S. Marshals in Montana. Reilly has even hinted at the potential for a crossover between the two shows, although nothing has been confirmed yet.

With a new showrunner at the helm and unresolved rivalries with the Jackson family, ‘Dutton Ranch’ season two has a lot at stake. What are you hoping to see unfold between Beth, Rip, and the Jacksons when the new season finally arrives?
