‘Peacemaker’ Star Jennifer Holland Reveals Why James Gunn Casts Friends and Family
James Gunn frequently faces questions about why so many familiar faces appear in his films. From his brother Sean Gunn to longtime collaborators like Michael Rooker, Nathan Fillion, and Steve Agee, as well as his wife Jennifer Holland, the director often works with people he knows well. Holland recently shared insights into this creative trend.
In a conversation with CinemaBlend, Holland clarified that Gunn’s casting choices stem from more than just favoritism. She noted that filmmaking can be a challenging and isolating endeavor, particularly when productions take place far from home for extended periods. According to her, Gunn simply prefers to be surrounded by trusted individuals during these lengthy shoots.
“It really just comes about because James loves to have his friends and family around him all the time,” Holland explained. “It’s hard to make movies; it’s lonely. You’re stuck in a place that’s not your home for a very long period of time.”
She elaborated that having loved ones close by helps Gunn maintain motivation throughout production. Instead of spending months away from familiar faces, he aims to include friends and family in his projects whenever feasible.
“You don’t have all of your friends and family with you, so as much as he can include friends and family in his movies, he tries. That gives them an excuse to be around and he really thrives on that. As much as he is a loner when it comes to sitting in an office, typing on his computer… he really is inspired by and revived by true relationships.”
This perspective sheds light on Gunn’s casting decisions, which have often sparked debates among fans. While some have questioned the recurring appearances of certain actors in multiple projects, Holland’s remarks suggest that the motivation is deeply personal rather than merely professional. For Gunn, collaborating with people he enjoys creates a more positive atmosphere during filming.
Gunn’s personal life also influences his creative work. A notable example is Krypto, Superman’s faithful dog, whose character traits were inspired by Gunn’s own rescue dog, Ozu, illustrating how his real-life connections shape his artistic choices.
Holland continues to play a significant role in Gunn’s DC Universe as Emilia Harcourt, a character she first portrayed in ‘The Suicide Squad’ and later in ‘Peacemaker’ and other DC projects. Her character remains integral to the expanding franchise as Gunn develops his new shared universe.
In a separate interview with GamesRadar+ during a screening of ‘Supergirl’, Holland expressed her enthusiasm for Gunn’s upcoming film, ‘Man of Tomorrow’. Although production is still ongoing, she mentioned that she has already viewed a significant portion of the movie and believes it could become her favorite of his works.
“I can tell you that I have seen an enormous, enormous portion of the movie, and I am so excited for ‘Man of Tomorrow’,” Holland stated. “It is different…I don’t wanna say this. Ugh. It might be James’s best… my favorite movie of James, and I haven’t even seen the whole thing yet. I love the movie. I’m really excited about it. It feels like a step up to me in a lot of ways. I’m excited for people to see it, and he’s not done filming it yet.”
According to information from GamesRadar+, ‘Man of Tomorrow’ is currently in production and is set to hit theaters on July 9, 2027. The film features David Corenswet, Rachel Brosnahan, Nicholas Hoult, Milly Alcock, and several other actors as Gunn continues to expand the new DC Universe.
