According to a report from The Wall Street Journal, A24’s upcoming film adaptation of Elden Ring has secured significant financial backing from Google. This investment is part of a larger collaboration between the tech giant and A24 aimed at developing innovative AI tools for filmmaking.

The film is being written and directed by Alex Garland and is based on the acclaimed FromSoftware video game set in the dark fantasy realm of the Lands Between. The narrative explores the aftermath of the Elden Ring’s destruction, which has fragmented into pieces held by powerful and corrupted demigods. Notably, George R. R. Martin, who contributed to the game’s original world, is also involved in the production.

The cast features Kit Connor, Cailee Spaeny, Ben Whishaw, Nick Offerman, Tom Burke, Havana Rose Liu, Sonoya Mizuno, Emma Laird, Peter Serafinowicz, and Jonathan Pryce. The film is currently slated for a theatrical release on March 8, 2028.

A key highlight is Google’s reported $75 million investment in A24. This funding is not solely for the film but also aims to develop AI-based production tools through Google DeepMind. These tools are expected to be utilized across various projects, including Elden Ring and another A24 video game adaptation, Death Stranding.

The partnership is anticipated to last several years, focusing on creating systems that can enhance aspects of filmmaking. This includes early-stage production tools like automated storyboarding and software designed to streamline pre-production workflows.

Both A24 and Google have emphasized that the technology is meant to support filmmakers rather than replace them. According to the companies, creative decisions will remain firmly in the hands of directors and production teams. The tools are described as optional and assistive, not mandatory.

The agreement has sparked discussions among fans online. Some enthusiasts of Elden Ring and Death Stranding have voiced concerns that AI involvement could impact the visual style or creative integrity of the films.

However, the companies have clarified that the tools being developed are intended for behind-the-scenes production support rather than generative content that would directly create final visuals.

The report also mentions that Google will not be permitted to use A24’s film projects to train its AI models, addressing concerns about creative ownership and data usage.

Despite the ongoing discussions surrounding AI, production on Elden Ring continues to progress as one of A24’s most anticipated upcoming releases. With its impressive cast, established source material, and notable creative talents involved, the film is positioned as a significant entry in the expanding trend of video game adaptations for cinema.
