In recent years, Hollywood has heavily relied on sequels, reboots, and established intellectual properties to fill theaters, a strategy that has largely proven successful at the box office. Despite the growing concern of franchise fatigue among industry analysts, original stories continue to find ways to resonate with audiences.

This ongoing tension between the dominance of intellectual properties and the need for genuine originality has made the emergence of original hits feel more significant than it did a decade ago. When a film without an existing fan base manages to gross hundreds of millions, it transforms into a noteworthy story rather than just another entry on a box office list.

The current roster of Hollywood’s highest-grossing original films of the decade illustrates the diverse range of success, encompassing animation, horror, and high-budget science fiction. Leading the pack is Pixar’s ‘Elemental,’ which has amassed 496 million dollars globally, solidifying its status as a sleeper hit after a challenging opening weekend in 2023.

Following closely is ‘Obsession,’ a low-budget horror sensation directed by Curry Barker, which has reached 403 million dollars worldwide. As reported by GamesRadar, the film’s production cost was approximately 750 thousand dollars, making its box office success one of the most remarkable return on investment stories of the decade.

Completing the top five are Pixar’s ‘Hoppers’ with 389 million dollars, Ryan Coogler’s vampire thriller ‘Sinners’ with 370 million dollars, and Christopher Nolan’s ‘Tenet’ with 365 million dollars. Previously, ‘Sinners’ held the record that ‘Obsession’ has now taken, having dethroned ‘Tenet’ as the decade’s top original earner just a year prior.

The remainder of the list showcases a wide array of genres and studios. ‘Free Guy,’ the Ryan Reynolds-led video game comedy, stands at 331 million dollars globally, while Illumination’s animated feature ‘Migration’ follows with 301 million dollars.

Zach Cregger’s horror thriller ‘Weapons’ has reached 270 million dollars, with Disney’s musical hit ‘Encanto’ close behind at 261 million dollars. Rounding out the top ten is Disney’s ‘Wish,’ which has earned 255 million dollars globally since its release.

What stands out in this list is the unique way each of these films attracted their audiences. Both ‘Elemental’ and ‘Hoppers’ initially opened softly but grew into long-term successes through positive word of mouth, a trend that has become characteristic of Pixar’s recent original releases. However, Pixar’s ‘Elio,’ released in 2025, notably did not follow this pattern and ended up underperforming against its budget, highlighting that the slow-burn strategy doesn’t always succeed.

On the other hand, ‘Obsession’ and ‘Sinners’ illustrate a different narrative. Both films demonstrated that horror, often viewed as a less commercially viable genre, can outperform more expensive blockbuster releases when the concept and execution resonate with viewers. ‘Sinners’ notably became the most Oscar-nominated film in history with 16 nominations, while ‘Obsession’ has been consistently breaking box office records since its May release.

The inclusion of ‘Tenet’ on this list presents a unique case study, as its 365 million dollar earnings occurred during a period of pandemic-related uncertainty in theaters, with many markets operating at reduced capacity or remaining closed. This context arguably enhances its impressive standing on the list beyond the raw financial figures.

As more original films continue to debut in the latter half of the year, including Christopher Nolan’s epic ‘The Odyssey,’ this list is far from complete. Which of these original hits do you believe deserves the most recognition for proving that Hollywood should continue investing in new ideas? Share your thoughts in the comments.
