Warner Bros. has consistently followed a predictable strategy for transitioning its major releases from theaters to home viewing. The speed of this transition often reflects the box office performance. This year’s DC Universe film featuring Kara Zor-El is the latest example, and the timeline for its digital release is generating buzz.

‘Supergirl,’ starring Milly Alcock in the lead role, debuted in theaters on June 26 as the second film in James Gunn and Peter Safran’s revamped DC Universe, following her brief appearance in last year’s ‘Superman.’ The cast also includes David Corenswet as Superman in a supporting role, alongside Matthias Schoenaerts, Eve Ridley, David Krumholtz, Emily Beecham, and Jason Momoa.

The film’s theatrical release has now led to confirmation of its home viewing schedule. ‘Supergirl’ is reportedly aiming for a digital release on July 28, just over 30 days after its theatrical debut, aligning closely with Warner Bros.’ recent practices for films that do not meet blockbuster expectations.

This quick turnaround has become a trend for Warner Bros. in 2026. Recent releases, including “They Will Kill You,” Lee Cronin’s “The Mummy,” and “Mortal Kombat II,” have all been made available on digital platforms within 31 to 32 days of their theatrical releases, and ‘Supergirl’ appears to be following this same timeline without an extended theatrical exclusivity period.

The rapid rollout contrasts sharply with last year’s ‘Superman,’ which, despite a strong box office performance with a $125 million opening weekend, took 35 days to reach digital platforms. This comparison is significant as ‘Supergirl’ has not achieved similar box office success.

‘Supergirl’ opened with an estimated $38 million domestically, falling short of the $47 to $50 million range analysts had predicted just days before its release. The film has also received mixed reviews compared to its predecessor, which often leads studios to opt for quicker digital availability instead of extending a theatrical window that isn’t yielding strong returns.

Once it becomes available, ‘Supergirl’ is expected to be accessible on major digital platforms such as Apple TV, Prime Video, VUDU, and Google Play, following the typical pricing structure Warner Bros. employs for its premium video on demand releases. However, fans looking to stream the film on HBO Max will have to wait longer, with estimates suggesting a debut in early to mid-September based on the studio’s recent release patterns.

As the franchise continues to find its footing after the character’s introduction in ‘The Flash’ in 2023 and the subsequent recasting under Gunn and Safran’s new DC Universe, this swift digital release suggests that Warner Bros. views ‘Supergirl’ as a film better suited for home audiences rather than pursuing theatrical momentum. Whether this strategy will help the film gain traction through rentals and purchases remains to be seen.
