Christopher Nolan and the Full Cast of ‘The Odyssey’ Celebrate World Premiere in London
Some premieres can feel like mere formalities, a quick stroll down the red carpet before heading inside for the film. However, Christopher Nolan’s ‘The Odyssey‘ transformed its London debut into a grand event, gathering nearly the entire cast on stage before the audience had seen a single frame.
The film’s world premiere occurred on Monday night at the Odeon Luxe Leicester Square, marking this adaptation of Homer’s ancient epic as one of the year’s most significant theatrical events. A massive wooden Trojan horse stood outside the venue, while inside, a screen behind the stage showcased the film’s title alongside a striking image of Odysseus in battle.
The screen also served as a reminder for anyone hoping to break news early, displaying a message that all reviews were strictly embargoed until Wednesday, July 15 at 5pm BST, while encouraging social media reactions in the meantime.
In front of that impressive backdrop, Nolan introduced his full principal cast for a rare group bow. Matt Damon, Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, Zendaya, Robert Pattinson, Lupita Nyong’o, Charlize Theron, and others stood together as the director addressed the audience. Photos and footage from this moment quickly spread online, with fans noting how unusual it is to see such a large cast assembled for a curtain call before the film begins.
Nolan took this opportunity to share what the London premiere meant to him personally, reflecting on the experience of seeing a film he created fill the same screen he watched movies on as a child. He expressed that he had spent years dreaming of making something worthy of that Leicester Square screen, calling the night truly incredible, especially with everyone who contributed to ‘The Odyssey’ present.
He also thanked the cast directly, along with the thousands of crew members involved in the production, and NBCUniversal chairman Donna Langley. Nolan described the filmmaking process as the thrill of a lifetime, a sentiment that resonated with a crowd eager for a memorable evening.
The size of the ensemble on stage reflects the expansive nature of this adaptation of Homer’s poem. In addition to the leads portraying Odysseus, Penelope, and their son Telemachus, the cast included Elliot Page, Himesh Patel, John Leguizamo, Mia Goth, Benny Safdie, and Samantha Morton, among others, who filled the roles of gods, suitors, and soldiers.
For several British cast members, including Holland, Pattinson, and Goth, the London premiere held special significance as a hometown event. This occasion also marked the official launch of what is anticipated to be an extensive global promotional tour leading up to the film’s theatrical release on July 17.
With reviews still under wraps until later in the week, the cast photo and Nolan’s remarks on stage have provided the first real insight into the atmosphere surrounding this project, and early indications suggest that the excitement in the room was genuine.
