The upcoming biopic about Britney Spears is making significant progress with the addition of a new writer. As reported by Page Six, screenwriter Liz Meriwether has been enlisted to work on an early draft of the film, bringing her creative expertise to this highly anticipated project.

Meriwether is well-known for her contributions to both television and film. She created the hit comedy series New Girl and penned the screenplay for the romantic comedy No Strings Attached. Her recent television work includes projects like Dying For Sex and The Dropout, adding her name to a talented team that already features Wicked director Jon M. Chu and producer Marc Platt.

The biopic will be based on Spears’ bestselling 2023 memoir, The Woman in Me. This book achieved remarkable success, becoming the fastest-selling memoir in Simon & Schuster’s history and selling millions of copies globally. It also topped bestseller lists shortly after its release.

Spears’ memoir chronicles her journey from a young performer in Louisiana to one of the world’s biggest pop icons. It delves into the challenging aspects of her personal life, including her relationships, the overwhelming media scrutiny, and the controversial conservatorship that governed her life for 13 years.

Hollywood studios expressed strong interest in adapting the memoir before Universal Pictures secured the rights. Numerous major companies, including Netflix, Disney, Warner Bros., and Sony, reportedly vied for the project.

The inclusion of Meriwether comes at a time when interest in music biopics is on the rise. The success of recent films about iconic artists has demonstrated that audiences are eager for behind-the-scenes narratives about famous musicians and their personal journeys. The Michael Jackson biopic Michael became one of the highest-grossing biographical films, heightening anticipation for other music-related projects.

Jon M. Chu has been attached to direct the Britney Spears film since 2024, with Marc Platt producing. The duo previously collaborated on Wicked, making their partnership with Meriwether a promising creative combination for the film.

Spears’ story has captivated global audiences for decades, not just due to her music career but also because of the intense public scrutiny surrounding her personal challenges. Her albums, including …Baby One More Time and Oops!… I Did It Again, solidified her status as one of the leading pop stars of her generation.

In recent years, public perception of Spears has evolved, with many reconsidering how she was treated by the media and entertainment industry during her peak fame. Her memoir provided fans with an intimate glimpse into her experiences and has become a crucial part of the ongoing conversation about her life and career.

Meriwether will now play a key role in translating that narrative for the big screen, adapting a complex and emotional journey into a feature film. With a renowned director, experienced producer, and celebrated writer on board, expectations for the Britney Spears biopic continue to rise.

Universal Pictures has yet to announce an official release date for the film, and the studio has not commented on the recent writing updates. However, the project seems to be progressing as fans eagerly await the first glimpse of how Spears’ story will be portrayed in theaters.
