The comedy genre has been lacking a certain unpredictable energy lately, but NEON’s upcoming film ‘The Wrong Girls’ seems poised to revive that spirit. This new movie promises a bizarre blend of friendship, poor choices, experimental drugs, talking cats, and a series of events that spiral out of control.

Marking the feature directorial debut of Dylan Meyer, who previously co-wrote the Netflix coming-of-age comedy ‘Moxie,’ this film takes a much more unconventional approach. It follows two best friends whose lives take a dramatic turn after they unwittingly get involved in a dangerous experiment.

Kristen Stewart and Alia Shawkat lead the cast as Frankie and Molly, two longtime friends who have spent years avoiding responsibility while enjoying a laid-back lifestyle. Their routine is abruptly disrupted when Frankie receives a mysterious briefcase intended for someone else.

Meyer describes the duo as not exactly the brightest when it comes to decision-making. “Frankie and Molly are codependent boneheads who have spent the last 10 years blissfully in a fog of weed smoke, co-signing each others’ bad choices and screening adulthood’s increasingly insistent calls,” the filmmaker shared with Entertainment Weekly.

Inside the briefcase are glowing experimental psychedelic drugs, and after trying them, Frankie and Molly find themselves with strange new abilities, including telepathy. Their unusual bond even extends to their cats, who become part of the ensuing chaos.

However, their accidental discovery leads to serious repercussions. The two women soon find themselves pursued by a group of Danish villains eager to reclaim their experimental creation. What begins as a simple blunder quickly escalates into a bizarre adventure filled with criminals, scientists, and a fight for survival.

Stewart has already teased the film’s quirky tone, describing it as a comedy that fully embraces its absurdity. “It’s a stoner girl comedy, and it’s really f—ing stupid,” Stewart remarked. “I think you’ll like it.”

The film also boasts a star-studded supporting cast. LaKeith Stanfield portrays NotMetalHeadDave, a character linked to the mysterious briefcase, while Zack Fox plays Molly’s boyfriend Josh. Tony Hale appears as a real estate developer, and Kate McKinnon takes on the role of Dr. Olsen, the scientist behind the experimental drugs.

Adding to the star power, Geena Davis plays Dr. Olsen’s partner, while Seth Rogen and Kumail Nanjiani lend their voices to Frankie and Molly’s talking cats. This eclectic lineup suggests that ‘The Wrong Girls’ aims for a truly over-the-top comedic experience.

This film also marks a significant milestone for Meyer as a filmmaker. Transitioning from screenwriter to director, she is crafting a narrative that fuses absurd humor with themes of friendship and maturity. While the film may center on chaos and comedy, the relationship between Frankie and Molly appears to be the emotional core of the story.

NEON’s choice to release the film in theaters underscores a growing interest in original, character-driven comedies that don’t rely on established franchises. ‘The Wrong Girls’ is not attempting to create a cinematic universe or adhere to a familiar formula. Instead, it seems focused on delivering a unique and memorable experience.

‘The Wrong Girls’ is set to hit theaters on August 14 through NEON. With its quirky premise, impressive cast, and commitment to being delightfully bizarre, the film could emerge as one of the more surprising comedy releases of the year.
