Live-Action ‘Moana’ Box Office Tracking Indicates One of Disney’s Toughest Openings

Disney has been heavily invested in live-action adaptations of its animated classics over the past few years, and for a significant period, this strategy seemed nearly infallible. Films like ‘The Lion King’ and ‘Beauty and the Beast’ transformed nostalgia into billion-dollar box office successes, with even a few less successful titles barely affecting the overall trend.

This confidence led Disney to swiftly adapt ‘Moana’ into live action, following the animated original closely, and just two years after ‘Moana 2’ surpassed the billion-dollar mark globally. Expectations were high for the summer release, with early projections suggesting the film could debut at over eighty million dollars domestically.

However, those projections have drastically changed. Current box office estimates indicate a worldwide opening weekend between 130 million and 140 million dollars, a figure that would mark one of the weakest global debuts for a Disney live-action film in recent years.

The decline has been swift and significant. Domestic tracking estimates have plummeted from an initial projection of around eighty-five million dollars to a range of forty-five to seventy million dollars, depending on the source, while international five-day estimates are closer to seventy to seventy-five million dollars.

To put this drop into perspective, the live-action remake of ‘The Little Mermaid’ opened to approximately 186 million dollars worldwide, which was already viewed as disappointing by Disney’s historical benchmarks. In contrast, ‘The Lion King’ and ‘Beauty and the Beast’ each debuted with over 170 million dollars domestically before ultimately exceeding a billion dollars globally.

Part of the issue seems to stem from timing rather than the film’s quality. ‘Moana’ is being released less than ten years after the original animated version, which remains a popular title on Disney+, leaving audiences with less nostalgia compared to older remakes.

Data from audience research firm The Quorum indicates that while ‘Moana’ has a high awareness score among moviegoers, its interest score has remained stagnant, suggesting that many are aware of the film’s existence but are not motivated to purchase tickets.

Additionally, the film is entering a particularly crowded market. ‘Toy Story 5’ continues to perform well in its third weekend, Illumination’s ‘Minions and Monsters’ has just been released, and Christopher Nolan’s ‘The Odyssey’ is set to dominate premium format screens shortly after ‘Moana’ hits theaters. This leaves the live-action remake with a limited opportunity to gain traction before losing audience interest and theater availability.

This downward trend follows a challenging summer for family films overall. Warner Bros and DC’s ‘Supergirl’ fell short of expectations earlier this season, and Illumination’s ‘Minions and Monsters’ opened with the franchise’s lowest numbers to date. ‘Moana’ now risks becoming another example of this trend rather than the standout that industry insiders had hoped for.

Despite these challenges, a disastrous overall run is not guaranteed. The film features Dwayne Johnson reprising his role as Maui alongside newcomer Catherine Laga’aia as the title character. Family audiences often show up gradually for films centered around sing-along appeal. However, with a reported production budget exceeding 200 million dollars before marketing, a weak opening weekend puts significant pressure on the film’s performance in the following weeks.

Whether ‘Moana’ can maintain its footing against a wave of blockbuster competition or quickly fades once ‘The Odyssey’ arrives will reveal much about the audience’s appetite for Disney’s live-action adaptations. For now, all eyes are on this weekend’s actual figures to determine if the tracking predictions hold true or if family audiences will turn out in larger numbers than analysts anticipate.
