‘M3GAN’ Spinoff ‘SOULM8TE’ Skips Theaters for Digital Release on August 1
The universe of ‘M3GAN’ is expanding, but fans will miss the chance to see its latest chapter on the big screen. The upcoming spinoff ‘Soulm8te’ has altered its release strategy and will now debut exclusively as a digital rental.
Universal Pictures Home Entertainment has confirmed that ‘Soulm8te’ will be available on digital platforms starting August 1. This change follows the film’s removal from Universal’s theatrical release schedule late last year, dashing hopes for a traditional cinema launch.
The new film takes the unsettling AI theme from the original franchise and explores it from a different angle. While ‘M3GAN’ centered on an advanced robotic child companion, ‘Soulm8te’ delves into the concept of an artificial partner created to fulfill emotional needs.
According to the official synopsis, the film “follows a grieving engineer tasked with testing a ruthless tech giant’s new artificially intelligent android. But when he attempts to program her to be a truly sentient soulmate, she develops needs of her own — unleashing a relentless spree of precision-engineered mayhem.”
Described as an erotic thriller with sci-fi and horror elements, the movie follows a man striving to create the perfect companion through technology, only to realize that imbuing an AI with human-like emotions can lead to perilous outcomes.
This project emerges from the same creative team that brought ‘M3GAN’ to life, the 2023 horror hit that became an unexpected success. The original film grossed over $181 million worldwide, turning its killer robot character into a viral sensation.
However, the franchise faced challenges with ‘M3GAN 2.0’. The sequel opened to around $10 million domestically and concluded its theatrical run with approximately $39 million worldwide, a significant decline compared to the first film’s performance.
Despite these hurdles, Universal is moving forward with the franchise through ‘Soulm8te’. The film features Lily Sullivan, David Rysdahl, Claudia Doumit, and Arty Froushan.
Kate Dolan, recognized for directing ‘You Are Not My Mother’, is at the helm for this spinoff. The story was crafted by James Wan, Ingrid Bisu, and Jordan, with Wan and Jason Blum producing the project.
Dolan explained that the film explores not just technology but also human emotions and connections. In her statement about the movie, she described it as an “exploration of relationships and loneliness.” She added, “Despite technological advances, there are enduring human truths we cannot escape, and I am looking forward to delving into those depths.”
The production team includes several familiar faces from the horror genre. Michael Clear and Judson Scott from James Wan’s Atomic Monster company serve as executive producers alongside Bisu, while Alayna Glasthal oversaw the project for Atomic Monster.
Although ‘Soulm8te’ will not receive a theatrical release, the digital format may allow the film to connect with a broader audience from the comfort of their homes. This decision reflects a growing trend where studios opt to release smaller genre films directly to streaming or digital platforms rather than risk a full theatrical rollout.
With its darker examination of artificial intelligence, loneliness, and relationships, ‘Soulm8te’ is poised to explore a new facet of the ‘M3GAN’ universe when it becomes available digitally on August 1. Whether it can capture the same attention as the original film remains to be seen, but the story of the killer AI is far from over.
