Karen Grassle, renowned for her role as Caroline “Ma” Ingalls on the classic series ‘Little House on the Prairie’, has embarked on a touching new chapter in her life. At 83, the actress has rediscovered love after reconnecting with a significant figure from her past, creating a narrative reminiscent of the uplifting moments from the cherished family drama.

Grassle’s unexpected reunion took place during her trip to Monaco for the 50th anniversary celebration of ‘Little House on the Prairie’ at the Monte-Carlo Television Festival. While there, she decided to visit Carrara, Italy, to reconnect with someone she had cared for many years ago.

The actress revealed to PEOPLE that she reached out to sculptor Robert Grove, a man she had dated in her youth. After obtaining his contact details, Grassle sent him a message inquiring if he would be open to a visit. The response was swift and enthusiastic.

“I was able to get an email, which wasn’t easy at first,” Grassle shared with PEOPLE. “I said, ‘How would you like a visitor?’ And he was enthusiastic. It was quite a surprise to find how close we felt when we saw each other.”

Their reunion quickly evolved into something deeper. Grassle confirmed that she and Grove eventually “fell back in love” after spending time together and realizing their enduring connection.

The actress has decided to split her time between the United States and Italy. She recently announced that she has completed the final steps of securing an apartment in Carrara, allowing her to be closer to Grove while continuing her life and work in America.

Grassle explained that her bond with Grove dates back many years. They first met when she was just 19, at a time when she was beginning her journey in theater and laying the groundwork for her successful acting career.

“When I first met him, I was only 19 years old and I was just starting my life in the theater,” Grassle recalled. “Everything was new and exciting!”

Although their initial romance did not endure, their recent reunion provided them with another chance to cultivate a relationship later in life. For Grassle, the timing finally felt right.

The actress became a household name when she joined ‘Little House on the Prairie’ as Caroline Ingalls, the matriarch of the Ingalls family. The NBC series, which aired from 1974 to 1983, became one of television’s most iconic family dramas, introducing audiences to characters like Charles Ingalls, Laura Ingalls, Mary Ingalls, and Carrie Ingalls.

The show was based on Laura Ingalls Wilder’s books about life on the American frontier and achieved significant success during its run. Grassle starred alongside Michael Landon, Melissa Gilbert, Melissa Sue Anderson, and Rachel Lindsay and Sidney Greenbush.

Even years after the series concluded, Grassle remains connected to the show and its fans. She continues to participate in ‘Little House on the Prairie’ fan events alongside other cast members, including Alison Arngrim, Dean Butler, and Charlotte Stewart.

Now, Grassle’s latest chapter is not one scripted for television. It is a genuine romance that illustrates how some connections can rekindle when the timing is finally right.
