Emmy Rossum’s ‘Shameless’ Salary Negotiation Publicized After Years of Struggle
Emmy Rossum has shared insights into the lengthy battle she faced while negotiating her salary for Showtime’s acclaimed series Shameless. The actress revealed that her efforts for equal pay did not gain traction until details of the private contract dispute were made public in 2016.
During her appearance on the Call Her Daddy podcast with host Alex Cooper, Rossum discussed how she spent years advocating for fair compensation for her role as Fiona Gallagher. Once the story broke, fan support surged, leading to a resolution within just one day.
“After the first headline or article, I was like what’s going to happen? And the tide really shifted,” Rossum recounted in the interview. “People seemed to write other articles, like immediately commenting on that, being quite surprised that I wasn’t already being paid equal. And it was resolved within a day.”
When Shameless debuted in 2011, William H. Macy was the more prominent star, portraying Frank Gallagher, the unreliable patriarch of the family, while Rossum was still establishing her presence as a lead on television. Prior to the show, she had gained recognition from films such as The Phantom of the Opera, The Day After Tomorrow, and Mystic River.
Rossum acknowledged that Macy’s higher salary at the start made sense due to his established fame. “It made a lot of sense for him to earn a lot more money than me,” she noted.
However, as the series progressed, Fiona emerged as a pivotal character. Rossum’s portrayal became central to many storylines, and audiences began to view her as one of the main faces of the show alongside Macy.

Rossum initially attempted to negotiate a higher salary before Season 3. Her team believed they had solid grounds for requesting more money, citing fan support and the character’s increasing significance. However, their request was turned down.
“We didn’t get it… and that’s fine. We tried and we didn’t get it,” Rossum reflected.
The actress continued to advocate for better pay in the subsequent years. Before Season 8, she and her team made another push, seeking compensation closer to Macy’s salary. Rossum shared that this request was swiftly denied, leading to uncertainty about her future on the show.
Then, the private negotiations became public.
Rossum expressed her surprise at seeing headlines about the dispute online, as she never anticipated that a personal contract negotiation would become public news.
“It’s a private business negotiation, and I never imagined it would become public,” she stated. “Not just for the public, but for the cast and crew.”
The public response shifted the dynamics almost instantly. After years of negotiations, Rossum finally secured the equal pay agreement she had long fought for.
William H. Macy also voiced his support for Rossum during the dispute. Speaking to TMZ at the time, he remarked that it was “about fucking time” she received fair compensation, emphasizing that she worked just as hard as he did.
Later, at Vulture Fest in 2017, Macy reiterated his defense of Rossum’s position, asserting that it was clear Fiona was central to the show.
“Who’s the center of the show? It’s Fiona. Of course she should get paid,” Macy stated.
Rossum remained with Shameless until Season 9 before departing from the series. She clarified that her exit was not due to frustration over the salary dispute but rather a desire to focus on producing, developing new projects, and gaining more control over her career.
Reflecting on her experience, Rossum emphasized that the fight was never solely about money. It was about being recognized and valued for the work she contributed.
“It was really about being valued equally when I was doing equal work,” Rossum concluded. “For me, it was as simple as that.”
