Chris Evans’ return to the MCU has been anything but straightforward. Since the first whispers of his comeback emerged, fans have spent over a year speculating whether Steve Rogers would return as the same hero who walked away at the end of ‘Avengers: Endgame,’ a darker Nomad-style variant, or perhaps even a villainous HYDRA version of the character.

This speculation intensified when Marvel confirmed Evans’ return, as the studio’s marketing strategy kept his new look a secret for months. The character’s initial official teaser for ‘Doomsday’ presented him with short hair and no beard, resembling his Endgame appearance and leading many to believe that would be his look for the film.

However, that assumption shifted this week. Marvel unveiled what it called the first official look at a bearded Steve Rogers in ‘Avengers: Doomsday,’ confirming that Evans will not be sporting the clean-cut style fans expected from Endgame.

The new bearded, longer-haired design echoes one of Rogers’ most iconic looks, reminiscent of his appearance in 2018’s ‘Avengers: Infinity War.’ Marvel is reportedly using this look to indicate a time jump between the film’s teaser and the main narrative. Earlier leaked concept art even suggested that the beard could be longer than his Infinity War style, paired with a tactical jacket that nods to his classic Nomad persona from the comics.

Steve’s storyline in ‘Doomsday’ is already tied to significant personal stakes. The film’s first HD teaser showcased him smiling while holding a child, reinforcing the idea that he found a happy ending with Hayley Atwell’s Peggy Carter after the events of Endgame. This teaser also provided a closer look at his wedding ring and a new motorcycle, along with the reveal of his and Peggy’s son.

Steve’s time travel remains crucial to the film’s plot, and with his happy ending rumored to be linked to the multiverse’s collapse, there is a real chance his family’s safety will become a central concern. Some fans have speculated that Evans could portray a darker variant of the character, though this week’s reveal offers no hints of a HYDRA twist.

Steve will be seen alongside Thor, Ant-Man, the New Avengers, the X-Men, and the Fantastic Four in newly released official concept art from Marvel Studios, which was showcased this week at the Shanghai Expo in China, confirming his role in the massive ensemble assembling to confront Doctor Doom. Marvel has also announced that footage from the Doomsday story will be included in the upcoming re-release of ‘Avengers: Endgame,’ serving as a bridge between the two films ahead of December.

‘Avengers: Doomsday’ is directed by Anthony and Joe Russo and features a screenplay by Michael Waldron and Stephen McFeely, with Robert Downey Jr. leading the ensemble as Doctor Doom. The film is set to hit theaters on December 18, and with Steve Rogers’ new look now officially revealed, fans have another piece of the puzzle as they try to decipher his role in stopping Doom.
