Apple TV+ Cancels Acclaimed Crime Drama ‘Dope Thief’ After One Season
Streaming platforms have transformed the way audiences engage with television, yet they have also introduced new frustrations for fans.
In recent years, numerous shows have faced cancellation after just one or two seasons, even when they receive positive reviews or cultivate a dedicated following. For viewers who invest their time in new series and their characters, these abrupt cancellations have become a frequent source of disappointment.
Fans of Apple TV+’s crime drama ‘Dope Thief’ have finally received news regarding its future, and it’s not the update many were hoping for. Despite garnering strong reviews from both critics and audiences, the series has officially concluded after just one season.
This news was reported by ScreenRant, which spoke with executive producer David W. Zucker during the 2026 Italian Global Series event. Zucker confirmed that Apple TV+ has opted not to continue the show, putting an end to months of speculation about a potential return.
Regarding the decision, Zucker explained that there had been ideas for continuing the narrative, but Apple ultimately chose not to proceed. “There was a way we potentially could have gone forward with that story, and I think it performed relatively well for Apple. But it wasn’t one that they opted to continue with.”
While the show has been canceled, Zucker did leave a glimmer of hope for the future. He noted that the television landscape has become unpredictable, with projects once deemed finished making comebacks years later. “I never thought we would make an Alien or Blade Runner series,” he remarked, adding that “it’s certainly possible” the series could return someday, even if there are no current plans.

‘Dope Thief’ premiered as an adaptation of Dennis Tafoya’s novel and was developed by Peter Craig. The storyline followed childhood friends Ray and Manny, who posed as DEA agents to rob drug dealers. What began as a scheme for quick cash quickly escalated into a perilous situation as they attracted the attention of real law enforcement and dangerous criminals.
The series featured Brian Tyree Henry as Ray and Wagner Moura as Manny. Their performances were pivotal in connecting with viewers. Critics lauded both actors, with Henry receiving his third Primetime Emmy nomination for his role.
The series also achieved an impressive 86 percent Certified Fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes, making its cancellation even more shocking for many fans.
Although ‘Dope Thief’ was initially marketed as a limited series, there were discussions about extending the narrative if audience response warranted it. According to Zucker, the project was always structured in a way that could have supported another season if Apple had chosen to continue.
There was also interest from the cast. Actress Kiều Chinh previously expressed a desire to delve deeper into her character. Her role was closely tied to the criminal world surrounding Ray, leaving room for further stories if the show had continued.
The television adaptation also made several alterations compared to the original novel. One significant difference involved the criminal organization known as The Alliance. While the book resolved that storyline much earlier, the series extended it until the finale, creating opportunities for another season that ultimately did not materialize.
Despite this, many viewers felt the ending served as a fitting conclusion. The final episode wrapped up most of the main story while leaving only a few questions unanswered. The death of Manny significantly altered the series’ direction, making it challenging to recreate the chemistry that many fans considered the heart of the show.
While some viewers will undoubtedly be disheartened by the end of ‘Dope Thief’, the series leaves behind a well-received first season that stands on its own. For now, it seems the acclaimed Apple TV+ crime drama has reached the conclusion of its story, even if a sliver of hope for a future return remains.
