Marvel Unveils New Look at Lewis Pullman’s Bob in ‘Avengers: Doomsday’
Lewis Pullman’s Bob Reynolds has emerged as one of the most surprising breakout characters from Marvel’s Phase Five, transforming what could have been a forgettable antihero team-up movie into one of the studio’s most emotionally resonant films in years.
His evolution from a fragile, unaware patient to the immensely powerful Sentry provided ‘Thunderbolts’ with a genuine emotional core, and audiences connected with that vulnerability in a way that even Marvel found unexpected.
This positive response helped Bob become the standout star of the ensemble, with his post-credits scene revealing him depowered and consciously avoiding his abilities due to fear of reawakening his darker half, the Void. Since then, fans have speculated about how much of that internal conflict will carry over when he joins the vast ensemble in ‘Avengers: Doomsday.’
This week, Marvel shared a new look at that answer, releasing fresh concept art showcasing Pullman’s Bob in the upcoming film.
Pullman has hinted that his ‘Thunderbolts’ teammates will keep a close watch on Bob throughout ‘Doomsday,’ working to find a way to harness what he described as the power of a thousand exploding suns without allowing his inner darkness to resurface. He noted that his allies view him as a valuable asset despite the risks he poses, caught between the desire to keep him close for potential power use and the fear of what could happen if he falls into the wrong hands.
In an interview with Deadline, Pullman expressed his disbelief at being part of the movie, describing the experience as incredibly fun and expressing gratitude for the opportunity to portray a character that holds significant personal meaning for him. He added that much of Bob’s ethos resonates deeply with him.
He also confirmed that the New Avengers, based out of Stark Tower alongside Bob, will eventually be alerted to a mysterious ship in space belonging to the Fantastic Four, hinting at how the team’s storyline connects to the film’s larger crossover.
Pullman stepped into the role after Steven Yeun departed the project, and he mentioned that discovering his own personal connection to Bob’s story, with guidance from ‘Thunderbolts’ director Jake Schreier, helped him make the character his own despite the pressure of taking on such a high-profile role on short notice. Given the weight of Sentry’s power in the comics, fans continue to speculate about how contained his role will be once Doctor Doom enters the fray.
‘Avengers: Doomsday’ reunites much of the ‘Thunderbolts’ cast, including Florence Pugh, David Harbour, Sebastian Stan, Wyatt Russell, and Hannah John-Kamen, alongside Chris Hemsworth, Anthony Mackie, and Tom Hiddleston. The film is set to hit theaters on December 18, and with this new look at Bob now circulating, fans have another piece to analyze as they try to predict how much control he will maintain once the action begins.
