The Truth Behind HBO Max’s ‘Raised by Wolves’ Cancellation Revealed
For years, fans of ‘Raised by Wolves’ have been left in the dark about the reasons behind HBO Max’s abrupt cancellation of the sci-fi series after just two seasons. Now, executive producer David W. Zucker has shed light on the situation, revealing that the decision was not primarily based on the show’s performance.
In an interview with ScreenRant’s Ben Gibbons during the 2026 Italian Global Series event, Zucker explained that the creative team was gearing up for another season when everything shifted due to the merger between WarnerMedia and Discovery, Inc. He noted that the series was poised to continue until the new leadership at Warner Bros. Discovery took charge.
“We were ready to do it,” Zucker stated, adding that “David Zaslav came in” after the merger, and “our third season got set aside.” These remarks provide the clearest insight yet into why ‘Raised by Wolves’ never returned, despite its growing fanbase and improved reviews in its second season.
Created by Aaron Guzikowski and executive produced by Ridley Scott through Scott Free Productions, ‘Raised by Wolves’ debuted in 2020 on HBO Max. The series followed two androids tasked with raising human children on the distant planet Kepler-22b after Earth was ravaged by war. Their mission became increasingly complex with the arrival of a religious group known as the Mithraic, leading to conflicts between science, faith, and survival.
The show featured performances from Amanda Collin, Abubakar Salim, Travis Fimmel, Niamh Algar, and others. While the first season received generally positive reviews, the second season garnered even greater acclaim from critics and cultivated a more dedicated audience.

Despite this momentum, HBO Max decided to cancel the series in 2022, leaving the narrative unresolved and fans searching for answers. Zucker expressed his hope that the show might one day return. “I personally wish that we would be able to bring ‘Raised by Wolves’ back,” he mentioned during the interview. He also highlighted the evolving landscape of television, which has made unexpected revivals more feasible.
“I never thought we would make an Alien or Blade Runner series,” Zucker said. “I keep hoping that [show] might have another day.”
His sentiments align with those of star Abubakar Salim, who also suggested that the Warner Bros. Discovery merger significantly influenced the cancellation decision. Salim revealed that creator Aaron Guzikowski and the creative team had considered various ways to conclude the story, though he acknowledged it would not unfold “in the same way we hoped.”
‘Raised by Wolves’ was not the only notable series impacted during this transitional period. Following the merger, Warner Bros. Discovery implemented several significant changes aimed at cost reduction. One of the most surprising cancellations was ‘Westworld’, which also ended before it could complete its intended storyline. Both ‘Westworld’ and ‘Raised by Wolves’ were ultimately removed from HBO Max as part of the company’s broader streaming strategy.
These decisions left many viewers disappointed, especially since both shows had cultivated passionate fan communities and still had unresolved storylines.
Currently, there are no plans announced to revive ‘Raised by Wolves’. The series has yet to secure a permanent streaming platform, making the prospect of a third season seem unlikely for the time being. Nevertheless, other canceled sci-fi franchises have found ways to continue through comic books, novels, and other formats, providing fans with some semblance of closure.
Zucker’s recent comments finally clarify one of the most pressing questions surrounding the series. According to him, ‘Raised by Wolves’ was not canceled due to dwindling viewership. Instead, its fate became another casualty of the extensive Warner Bros. Discovery merger, cutting short one of HBO Max’s most ambitious sci-fi endeavors before its story could reach completion.
