Jaafar Jackson Makes Box Office History With His First Major Film Role
Biopics have traditionally not been the go-to genre for studios aiming for blockbuster success, often garnering awards recognition rather than breaking box office records typically held by superhero films and animated features. This year’s rollout of the Michael Jackson film was perceived as a gamble from the outset, particularly with a debut actor in the lead role. However, the outcome has exceeded all expectations.
‘Michael’ premiered in theaters this past April, generating a mix of excitement and skepticism, with pre-release forecasts estimating a modest opening of around sixty-five to seventy million dollars domestically.
Contrary to those predictions, the film surpassed expectations with a staggering ninety-seven million dollar domestic debut and a worldwide opening exceeding two hundred million, setting a new standard for musical biopics. The film’s momentum continued to build over the subsequent months.
As of this week, ‘Michael’ has officially crossed the one billion dollar mark in global ticket sales, making it the first biopic ever to achieve this milestone. This remarkable feat places Jaafar Jackson, who portrays his real-life uncle in his inaugural film role, at the forefront of an extraordinary box office narrative, as this film also marks his acting debut. Few actors can claim that their first credited performance helped propel a film to nine figures, let alone ten.
The journey to this milestone was not without its challenges. Reports indicate that reshoots costing up to fifty million dollars were necessary after the Jackson estate raised a legal concern regarding a settlement clause that prevented the film from depicting one of Jackson’s accusers. This led the filmmakers to adjust the film’s third act, shifting focus from the abuse allegations that overshadowed his later years to his preparations for the 1987 Bad tour instead.

This change elicited a mixed critical response, with many reviews praising Jaafar Jackson’s performance while questioning the film’s choice to soften its subject’s more complex legacy.
Despite this friction, ticket sales have remained robust. ‘Michael’ has now surpassed ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ to become the highest-grossing music biopic ever and has overtaken Christopher Nolan’s ‘Oppenheimer’ to claim the title of the highest-grossing biographical film overall. It has also become the largest release in Lionsgate’s history, easily surpassing the studio’s previous record set by ‘The Hunger Games: Catching Fire’ in 2013.
Director Antoine Fuqua described the achievement as a deeply humbling moment, attributing the film’s success to the hard work of the producers, cast, and crew. Lionsgate Motion Picture Group chair Adam Fogelson echoed this sentiment, highlighting the collaboration between the studio, producer Graham King, and a cast led by Jaafar Jackson, Colman Domingo, and Nia Long as pivotal to the film’s triumph.
Universal Pictures International president Veronika Kwan Vandenberg framed this milestone as evidence that Michael Jackson continues to be a global cultural icon decades after his peak, noting how the film resonated with audiences worldwide during its release.
The film’s international performance has been a significant aspect of its success, earning nearly six hundred thirty million dollars overseas compared to approximately three hundred seventy million domestically, illustrating its broad appeal beyond North America.
With ‘Michael’ now recognized as one of the defining box office stories of the year, only the animated hit ‘The Super Mario Galaxy Movie’ has reached the billion-dollar milestone ahead of it in 2026, placing Jaafar Jackson’s debut performance in an exceptionally rare category. Lionsgate has already expressed interest in developing at least one more film focused on Jackson’s life, suggesting that this milestone could be the beginning of a larger franchise rather than a standalone achievement.
