‘All American’ Season 8 Premiere Review: Family Tension and Amina’s Major Twist
For eight seasons, The CW has relied on ‘All American’ to provide the football-filled, family-centric storytelling that has garnered a dedicated fanbase since its debut. The series has navigated network changes, cast exits, and evolving timelines, yet it consistently managed to keep its core audience engaged. Now, after more than a year off the air, the Beverly and Crenshaw crew is back for one last adventure.
The eighth and final season kicked off with a two-hour premiere on July 13, featuring episodes one and two back-to-back on The CW. This farewell carries significant weight as it represents the last scripted series from the network’s legacy output deal with Netflix, marking a historic moment for a show that has followed this cast since 2018.
The premiere, consisting of the episodes ‘Rewind’ and ‘There Is No Competition,’ picks up six months after the football cliffhanger that concluded Season 7. Unlike previous seasons that spanned months, this final installment compresses everything into a single week in the lives of Jordan, Layla, Coop, Cassius, KJ, Khalil, Amina, and Preach, placing immediate pressure on every relationship still fragile from past events.
‘Rewind’ focuses on Cassius and KJ as they embark on an unexpected fight for their shared future, while KJ’s recent intensity raises concerns for those who care about him. Meanwhile, Jordan and Cassius attempt to forge a family bond outside of football, only to encounter an early obstacle. The second episode shifts the spotlight to Jordan’s struggle to reconnect with Layla, Cassius’s efforts to prove he deserves to remain Beverly’s coach, and Amina’s sudden return, which disrupts Khalil and KJ at a critical moment.
Amina’s return is quickly becoming the premiere’s most discussed topic. After spending time at the Dinsburg boarding school, she comes home during Dead Week, a time before finals when classes are canceled. However, her homecoming is linked to a secret that promises to impact nearly every storyline this season.
Showrunner Nkechi Okoro Carroll has begun teasing the implications of that secret for the ensemble moving forward. In an interview with TVLine, she shared that Amina’s situation will ultimately affect almost everyone’s lives, adding with a chuckle that it’s all she can reveal for now. Carroll also hinted at upcoming flashbacks that will showcase how Amina and KJ became so close during the six months since Season 7 ended.

Critics who viewed the double premiere appear genuinely optimistic about the direction of this final chapter. One reviewer noted that the season does not rush to clarify everything that transpired during the time jump, instead allowing the story to unfold gradually while maintaining momentum. This reviewer highlighted the dynamic between Jordan and Cassius, cousins who spend much of their screen time playfully teasing each other about football, basketball, and their marriages, while clearly showing genuine affection beneath it all.
Other early reactions praised the return of the show’s found family vibe, especially the monthly ‘Smash and Crash’ tradition where the friend group gathers for burgers and reconnects. Fans and critics alike have also noted KJ’s intense focus on football this season, drawing comparisons to Spencer’s intensity in earlier seasons. Meanwhile, Jordan and Layla’s reunion has proven to be more complicated than anticipated, with Layla returning from tour to find Jordan preoccupied, distracted, and unaware of how much has changed in her absence.
There is also a lingering thread for fans to ponder as they head into episode three. Near the end of the premiere, Jordan receives a cryptic text from Beverly principal Ed London, requesting a private meeting and specifically excluding Cassius from the conversation. This detail feels significant, especially considering Cassius’s coaching position may already be precarious following Beverly’s playoff loss to Crenshaw.
With 13 episodes in total and the series finale, titled ‘To Live and Die in L.A.,’ scheduled to air on September 28, fans now have a clear countdown to the end. Based on the premiere alone, ‘All American’ seems determined to provide these characters with the farewell they deserve rather than rushing to the finish line.
