Samantha Morton has dedicated over three decades to demonstrating that even brief screen appearances can leave a lasting impression. Following her captivating portrayal of Circe in Christopher Nolan’s ‘The Odyssey’, the two-time Oscar nominee is garnering some of the most significant acclaim of her career.

In a conversation with The Hollywood Reporter, Morton shared insights into her approach to embodying the formidable witch goddess from Homer’s epic poem. She emphasized her desire to bring the character to life, despite her limited screen time in the film.

In ‘The Odyssey’, Morton’s Circe greets Odysseus and his crew upon their arrival on her island. What starts as a moment of refuge quickly escalates into peril as she transforms his men into pigs. This scene, crafted with Nolan’s renowned emphasis on practical effects, has become one of the film’s most discussed highlights.

Director Christopher Nolan has been particularly vocal in praising Morton’s performance. In an interview with The Los Angeles Times, he commended the freedom she brought to the role, stating, “There are no limitations on her performance.” He even likened the crew’s reaction to her takes to the legendary response Heath Ledger received for his role in ‘The Dark Knight’.

For Morton, the role was not about replicating previous interpretations of Circe or adhering to external expectations. She explained to The Hollywood Reporter that she aimed to connect deeply with the script and craft her own interpretation of the character.

“This is the character here on this page. This is what I have,” Morton stated. She described Circe as a modern and relatable figure, saying, “She’s my sister, my mother, my gran, my aunt, my neighbor. She felt very real and very condensed.”

Morton also disclosed that she consciously avoided being overly influenced by other portrayals of Circe. While she conducted research and even purchased Madeline Miller’s novel ‘Circe’, she chose not to let other interpretations dictate her performance.

The actress expressed her desire to fully embrace the role. “I just wanted to own it. I wanted to possess it and own it and be it,” she explained.

Morton’s confidence is partly rooted in her life experiences. She shared with The Hollywood Reporter that her upbringing in foster care and children’s homes instilled in her the determination to assert her place and recognize her worth, even in the presence of influential figures.

“I have a right to be here. I’m a human being. I have a right to be here,” Morton recalled.

This mindset empowered her to navigate a large-scale Christopher Nolan production without feeling daunted by the film’s magnitude or the star power surrounding her. Morton mentioned that she never felt intimidated working alongside actors like Matt Damon, as everyone was focused on the same goal.

Although her filming for ‘The Odyssey’ was brief, Morton expressed her enjoyment of every moment. She spent around ten days shooting the Circe sequence and humorously noted that she was reluctant to leave the set.

Morton also praised Nolan’s directing style, stating that his guidance was always sensible and contributed to her growth. She remarked that every piece of feedback from the filmmaker felt “poignant and relevant and right.”

After years of delivering powerful performances in projects like ‘The Whale’, ‘She Said’, and ‘The Serpent Queen’, Morton admitted that receiving this level of recognition from Nolan has been deeply moving.

“It validates the fact that I’m good at what I do and I care,” she expressed. With ‘The Odyssey’ introducing her talent to a vast global audience, Morton’s portrayal of Circe may become one of the most memorable performances in Nolan’s ambitious adaptation of Homer’s classic tale.
