After over 15 years off the air, ‘King of the Hill’ is back, and the initial reviews indicate that this beloved animated comedy has made a triumphant return. With its premiere on Hulu set for July 20, the revival has already achieved a flawless 100% critics’ score on Rotten Tomatoes based on the first eight reviews.

This positive reception bodes well for a series celebrated for its relatable characters and grounded humor. Rather than attempting a complete overhaul, the new season seems to focus on the elements that endeared ‘King of the Hill’ to fans while updating its narrative for contemporary viewers.

Season 15 picks up years after the original series concluded. Hank and Peggy Hill are now relishing their retirement on Rainey Street, but their tranquil life is soon interrupted as they navigate the quirky situations and vibrant neighbors that have always surrounded them. Their son Bobby is also at a new crossroads, juggling old friendships while tackling the challenges of running his own business.

The revival brings the familiar Texas town into the modern era. According to the official season description, Hank now finds himself amidst electric cars, science fiction conventions, and other contemporary trends that clash with his traditional mindset. This culture clash has become a significant source of humor in the new episodes.

Critics have reacted very favorably to the show’s return. Jared Richards from The Age awarded the season four out of five stars, praising how seamlessly the series integrates into today’s world. He described the new season as “a simple delight,” noting that Hank’s responses to modern life provide ample laughs.

Processed Media critic Randy Dankievitch shared similar enthusiasm, giving the season an A grade. He remarked that “King of the Hill settles back into itself like a farmhouse after a thunderstorm… a distinctly memorable, singular reflection on Americana that’s still running strong nearly 270 episodes in.” His review indicates that the revival feels just as genuine as the original series.

At Pop Culture Leftovers, Tiffany McLaughlin felt the latest episodes surpass the previous revival season. She wrote, “While at times Season 14 felt like dipping a toe back into the Arlen pool rather than diving headfirst, the all-new Season 15 sheds the training wheels and fully embraces the core fanbase as the love letter to the series it is.”

People’s World critic Chauncey K. Robinson also commended the new episodes, awarding them an A grade and labeling the season “comedic gold.” Robinson added that the show provides “a refreshing interpretation of the current state of our world and how we navigate it,” demonstrating that ‘King of the Hill’ still has relevant messages while remaining humorous.

Collider’s Nate Richard was among the most enthusiastic reviewers, scoring the season 9 out of 10. He stated that “The King of the Hill revival has safely cemented itself as one of the best modern revivals on television, and this new batch of episodes proves that Season 14 wasn’t just a fluke.”

Luke Y. Thompson, writing for Mortal Cinema, also emphasized the show’s optimistic message. He noted that “Part of the point of this season, though, is learning to coexist – again, an idealization more optimistic than real life, but sometimes cartoons can be aspirational.”

Although only eight reviews have been published thus far, the perfect Rotten Tomatoes score marks a promising start for the revival. More reviews are expected to come in after the full season debuts, which may affect the rating over time, but the initial feedback indicates that longtime fans have much to anticipate.

With familiar characters, updated narratives, and critics already hailing it as one of television’s strongest revivals, ‘King of the Hill’ seems to have successfully returned to Arlen without losing the charm that made it a classic in the first place.
