Sauron’s Transformation in ‘Rings of Power’ Season 3 Confirmed by Patrick McKay
Prime Video’s Middle-earth saga has dedicated two full seasons to building up to a significant moment: the point where Sauron finally sheds his disguises and fully embraces his role as the central threat of the story. For a character whose essence is rooted in deception throughout Tolkien’s mythology, this shift marks a new chapter for the series.
This careful buildup has been intentional. Throughout Seasons 1 and 2, Sauron operated under various aliases, such as the wayward king Halbrand and the elven smith Annatar, manipulating key characters without them realizing his true identity. This slow-burning narrative has been a defining characteristic of the show.
Now, the showrunners have officially confirmed that the time for concealment has ended. In an interview with Empire, co-showrunner Patrick McKay stated that this season will showcase Sauron forging the One Ring in the volcano, marking the moment the Dark Lord fully reveals himself.
“Yes, a pivotal piece of Middle-earth history is imminent. This is the season where Sauron makes the One Ring in the volcano. We have a full-on villain this season, in a way that was quite different before. This third season is darker, more dangerous. No one is safe,” McKay explained.
This transformation impacts more than just Sauron’s appearance. Co-showrunner J.D. Payne described the shift bluntly, noting that the show now features a true villain, unlike previous seasons. McKay emphasized that Sauron’s emergence alters the show’s tone entirely, calling this third season darker and more perilous, with the stark warning that no character is safe.
This escalation was deliberate, according to McKay. He explained that the first two seasons focused on world-building, lighting fuses, and setting stories in motion, while the third season is when all those elements begin to explode, framing this chapter as the culmination of everything the series has carefully constructed.

For star Charlie Vickers, portraying one of the most crucial moments in Tolkien’s mythology carries significant weight beyond just another filming season. According to Empire’s reporting, stepping into this next phase of Sauron’s journey was a serious undertaking, given the importance of the One Ring’s creation in the broader Lord of the Rings saga.
This significance extends to the entire cast as well. Empire’s coverage includes insights from Vickers, Morfydd Clark as Galadriel, Robert Aramayo as Elrond, and Daniel Weyman as Gandalf, highlighting a season focused on the forces of good and evil finally colliding rather than merely circling each other.
Sauron’s full transformation into an unmasked villain signifies more than just a plot milestone; it fundamentally reshapes the show’s structure moving forward. With his identity no longer hidden and his manipulation tactics rendered ineffective, the series must transition from a narrative centered on deception to one focused on open conflict and survival.
This pivot aligns with the official synopsis for the season, which places the story at the height of the War of the Elves and Sauron, as the Dark Lord seeks the power necessary to win the war and ultimately rule all of Middle-earth. Given the meticulous buildup to this moment, expectations for its execution are higher than ever.
With ‘The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power’ Season 3 set to premiere on Prime Video on November 11, Sauron’s long-awaited transformation into a full-fledged villain is poised to be the defining storyline of the season.
