Fans React as ‘District 9’ Director Releases First Fully AI-Created Film on YouTube
‘District 9’ director Neill Blomkamp has sparked a lively online debate following the release of his first fully AI-generated short film. The sci-fi filmmaker recently unveiled ‘Nightborne’, a 13-minute proof-of-concept project crafted entirely with artificial intelligence, but the reception from many viewers has been less than favorable.
Released on YouTube on July 19, this short film marks the inaugural project from Barley Studios, an AI-centric film company established by Blomkamp. The director revealed that the entire film was produced using Seedance 2.0, with him steering the process through prompts instead of conventional filmmaking techniques.
‘Nightborne’ tells the story of a U.S. Army pilot who survives a perilous mission after her aircraft is shot down in Syria. After sustaining severe injuries, she becomes part of a covert government initiative called Nightborne, which employs a control implant in her brainstem, transforming her into a weapon under government control.
The narrative is set in the same sci-fi universe as Peter Watts’ 2014 novel ‘Echopraxia’, which includes themes of advanced technology, vampires, alien life, and zombies. While Watts has yet to comment on the short film, the project has already ignited extensive discussion online.
The primary criticism has centered on the quality of the AI-generated visuals, dialogue, and overall aesthetic. Many viewers have questioned the filmmaking choices, stating that the short lacks the human touch typically found in traditional productions.
Some fans expressed their disappointment that Blomkamp, known for his visually imaginative films like ‘District 9’, ‘Chappie’, and ‘Elysium’, is investing his time in AI exploration instead of returning to projects they are eager to see. One YouTube commenter remarked, “No thank you. What a crazy fall from grace for such a beloved filmmaker.”
Another viewer criticized the experiment on social media, stating, “Wow Neill, thank you for showing us that even in the hands of an established director, AI slop looks indistinguishable from everyone else’s AI slop!”
Others humorously suggested they would prefer to see progress on ‘District 10’, the long-anticipated sequel to ‘District 9’.
Despite the backlash, Blomkamp seems determined to delve into AI filmmaking. In a statement shared on Instagram, he explained that he has been experimenting with AI technology for several years and believes it has reached a stage where he can utilize it for larger projects. “I’ve been experimenting with AI for a couple of years, and it’s now at the point where I want to tackle a full feature in this format,” Blomkamp stated.
He also elaborated on the vision behind Barley Studios, likening it to his previous production company Oats Studios, which focused on traditional filmmaking and visual effects.
“Barley Studios will be my new AI studio for creating my own films, the way Oats Studios was for traditional film and VFX,” he added.
This controversy arises as AI-generated films increasingly become a hot topic in Hollywood. Recent projects utilizing AI tools have ignited similar debates, with audiences split on whether this technology signifies the future of filmmaking or poses a threat to traditional creative endeavors.
At present, Blomkamp has not revealed whether ‘Nightborne’ will evolve into a full-length movie, but he has hinted that a feature-length AI project could be his next significant venture. Meanwhile, fans of ‘District 9’ continue to wait and see if the long-rumored ‘District 10’ will ever come to fruition.
Blomkamp previously mentioned that the sequel’s status is uncertain, admitting in 2023 that he was unsure if he wanted to pursue it at that time. While the director explores new technology, many fans remain hopeful that he will eventually return to the universe that made him famous.
