Christopher Nolan’s ‘The Odyssey’ Boosts Book Sales and Spotify Audiobook Listens
Christopher Nolan’s ‘The Odyssey’ has transcended the realm of a typical Hollywood release. This epic adventure film has become a global phenomenon, revitalizing interest in Homer’s nearly 3,000-year-old narrative and introducing this classic tale to a new generation of enthusiasts.
The film debuted with impressive figures, raking in $264.1 million worldwide during its opening weekend, marking one of the most successful launches of Nolan’s career. Featuring Matt Damon as Odysseus, the movie chronicles the legendary Greek hero’s quest to return home post-Trojan War, where he encounters mythical creatures, formidable gods, and daunting challenges.
Alongside Damon, the film stars Anne Hathaway as Penelope and Tom Holland as Telemachus, focusing on Odysseus’ arduous journey back to Ithaca while his family confronts threats from powerful suitors aiming to seize his kingdom.
The success of Nolan’s adaptation has sparked an unexpected surge in sales for the original source material. According to Circana BookScan data, sales of all editions of Homer’s ‘The Odyssey’ have skyrocketed by 76% this year as more individuals seek to engage with the story that inspired the blockbuster film.
This popularity surge has also impacted audiobook sales. Spotify has reported a significant rise in audiobook listens for ‘The Odyssey’ following the film’s release.

On July 17, the same day Nolan’s film premiered, Spotify noted that audiobook listens for ‘The Odyssey’ surged by over 500%. The platform also indicated that listening figures had already begun to climb before the film’s release, with a 240% increase in June.
Post-release, Spotify anticipates that listens will rise by approximately 680% compared to previous levels. With 91 different audiobook editions available in 10 languages, ‘The Odyssey’ has now been played for the equivalent of over 43 years of continuous listening.
The audiobook revival has notably attracted a younger demographic. Spotify’s data reveals that 36% of listeners are from Generation Z, while 45% are Millennials. Additionally, men account for 63% of total listeners for ‘The Odyssey’ audiobook.
Lena Yang, Senior Editor for Audiobooks at Spotify, shared with Variety that this renewed interest highlights how classic tales can captivate new audiences through contemporary formats.
“It’s always exciting to see beloved classics find new audiences,” Yang stated. “Audiobooks offer a fresh way to experience timeless tales, and it’s especially rewarding to see listeners returning to ‘The Odyssey’ in such a meaningful way.”
Nolan’s film has also generated remarkable excitement among moviegoers. The demand for premium screenings, particularly IMAX 70mm presentations, has been so intense that some fans have traveled considerable distances to enjoy the film in its intended format.
The director’s reputation for grand-scale filmmaking, coupled with the movie’s stellar cast and the enduring allure of Homer’s narrative, has positioned ‘The Odyssey’ as one of the most significant entertainment events of the year.
Nearly 3,000 years after its inception, Homer’s epic poem is once again becoming a vital part of popular culture. Thanks to Nolan’s adaptation, millions of viewers who may have never engaged with the original text are now discovering the journey of Odysseus for themselves.
