Magneto’s New Look in ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ Leaked from San Diego Comic-Con
Movie marketing has evolved significantly over the years, and sometimes the most exciting reveals come not from trailers but from unexpected places like toy aisles.
This past weekend, fans finally got a clear look at Ian McKellen’s Magneto in ‘Avengers: Doomsday’, not through Marvel’s marketing but via collectible merchandise unveiled at San Diego Comic-Con.
The character has been kept under wraps leading up to the release, with trailers providing only fleeting glimpses of his return. However, Sideshow Collectibles and Hasbro showcased their upcoming Magneto figures, offering fans their first full view of McKellen’s costume for the film.
The design heavily features red, marking a distinct departure from the character’s previous cinematic appearances. The figure showcases a tailored long-sleeved tunic, a belt with an X-shaped buckle, matching pants, tall black boots, and a striking gray cape lined in burgundy, all centered around a newly sculpted helmet with rolling eyeballs modeled after McKellen.
This level of detail is also present in the Hot Toys 1/6th scale version of the figure, which stands approximately 11.8 inches tall and is available in both Collector’s and Deluxe editions, priced at $285 and $390, respectively. The Deluxe version notably includes a display base featuring a battle-damaged Sentinel head, hinting at a confrontation between Magneto and the robotic mutant-hunters in the film.
Hasbro’s more accessible Marvel Legends line is also participating in the reveal, offering its own version of the character as part of an Amazon-exclusive figure priced at $27.99, with pre-orders opening during Comic-Con and a release expected later this year. This marks Magneto’s first appearance in the Marvel Legends line specifically tied to an Avengers film, despite McKellen portraying the character since 2000’s original ‘X-Men’.
This costume stands out as arguably the most comic-accurate design for the character to date, featuring the classic red-and-purple color scheme long associated with Magneto in the comics. This is a notable change for McKellen, whose previous cinematic looks in the original ‘X-Men’ trilogy and ‘X-Men: Days of Future Past’ leaned towards darker, more muted tones.
The timing of this reveal coincides with San Diego Comic-Con’s broader Marvel Studios presence this year, where Robert Downey Jr. and several cast members participated in a Hall H panel alongside producer Kevin Feige and directors Anthony and Joe Russo. A new trailer shown to attendees reportedly focused primarily on Robert Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom, leaving characters like Magneto and Patrick Stewart’s Professor X with minimal screen time, likely increasing the demand for a clearer look at their designs.
McKellen’s role in ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ marks his first appearance as Magneto in an Avengers-branded film after decades associated with the X-Men franchise, following earlier teasers where he was seen reuniting with Patrick Stewart’s Professor X. Fans have been speculating for months about his role within this new multiversal team-up, and the merchandise reveal has only intensified that speculation.
With Doctor Doom positioned as the main antagonist, Magneto’s portrayal in such a heroic, comic-inspired costume suggests that his allegiance may align firmly with Earth’s assembled heroes. Whether this translates into a more significant role on screen remains to be seen when the film releases later this year.
‘Avengers: Doomsday’ is scheduled to hit theaters on December 18.
