Comic-Con has always served as a hub for surprise reveals, but often the most intriguing hints come disguised as jokes rather than formal announcements. This year, Ryan Reynolds executed just that, leaving fans eager to decipher the implications.

The actor roamed the San Diego Comic-Con floor in a denim-themed Deadpool costume, taking photos with fans who were blissfully unaware of his presence. It wasn’t until he unexpectedly joined Marvel’s Hall H panel later that day, revealing his identity mid-performance, that the internet truly took notice.

Reynolds dubbed his character “Jeanpool” and shared behind-the-scenes images of the transformation on Instagram Stories. This playful naming, along with a specific detail he shared afterward, has ignited a flurry of speculation about Marvel’s future plans.

The detail that caught everyone’s attention came from an Instagram post where Reynolds labeled his gray-toned suit as “Jean Grey 9-1963,” a clever nod to the character’s name and the year of her first comic appearance. This seemingly simple joke hints at a much larger narrative.

This reference directly connects to a notable piece of X-Men comic history. The number refers to a classic X-Men comic issue where the team faces off against the Avengers, revolving around the villain Lucifer, who is sheltered by the X-Men while carrying a bomb that could cause massive destruction.

Fans have not overlooked the connection between this plot and the current MCU landscape, especially with ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ hinting at rising tensions between the Avengers and X-Men factions. Recent trailer footage has shown Simu Liu’s Shang-Chi facing off against Channing Tatum’s Gambit, indicating a confrontation between the two teams is likely part of the film’s narrative.

The gray suit itself boasts a comic book legacy, tracing back to Marvel’s X-Force comics, where Wolverine’s covert team traded their vibrant colors for a more subdued black-and-gray aesthetic. Deadpool first adopted this look after joining the squad in 2010’s ‘Wolverine: The Road to Hell’ #1, swapping the red sections of his classic costume for gray.

Whether this hints at Deadpool’s role in ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ remains uncertain, as Marvel Studios has yet to officially confirm his involvement in the film. During his Hall H appearance, Reynolds even inquired with the Russo Brothers and the film’s cast about filming, only to be told that production had already concluded, a response that could be interpreted as either a genuine no or just part of the act.

Nonetheless, bringing Reynolds out for a scripted moment on the Hall H stage, combined with a comic-specific Easter egg shared on social media, seems too coincidental for many fans analyzing every detail. Marvel has a well-known history of embedding real clues within seemingly casual jokes, and this wouldn’t be the first instance.

For now, fans can only wait to see how, or if, this particular storyline unfolds when the film finally premieres. ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ is set to hit theaters on December 18.
