‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ and ‘The Odyssey’ Poised for Historic Box Office Weekend
Superhero films have faced a challenging few years at the box office, with several recent Marvel releases underperforming, leading to speculation about audience fatigue. However, that narrative is about to be challenged.
‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ has hit theaters this week with high expectations, and early signs indicate it is meeting the hype. Tom Holland’s fourth solo venture as Peter Parker has seen its box office projections soar beyond initial estimates.
Just weeks ago, Sony’s conservative estimates placed the film’s domestic opening between $190 million and $195 million. Now, as reported by Variety, optimistic industry trackers believe a debut exceeding $300 million is possible, a milestone that only one film has achieved in history.
That film is ‘Avengers: Endgame,’ which set the all-time domestic opening weekend record in 2019 with $357.1 million. If ‘Brand New Day’ surpasses the $300 million mark, it would become only the second film to do so, placing it among the largest openings in cinematic history.

Deadline’s tracking data, considered the most conservative among major trade outlets, currently estimates the film’s three-day domestic opening between $180 million and $190 million. Other trackers, however, have provided more aggressive projections, with Box Office Pro suggesting figures as high as $230 million to $250 million, and Global Box Office estimating between $260 million and $300 million domestically.
This surge in projections is largely driven by impressive advance ticket sales. Deadline noted that the film achieved its best first-day presales in five years, a record last seen with ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’ in 2021, with domestic presales reportedly exceeding $60 million before the opening weekend.

On a global scale, the figures are even more impressive. GlobalBoxOffice’s tracking suggests a worldwide opening weekend nearing $800 million, according to Dark Horizons, which would mark the second-largest global debut in box office history, following ‘Endgame’s’ staggering $1.2 billion opening.
Part of this international success can be attributed to the film’s simultaneous release in China, a market that ‘No Way Home’ missed due to regulatory issues with its climactic Statue of Liberty scene. Chinese audiences have not seen a new Holland-led Spider-Man film since 2019’s ‘Far From Home,’ and early box office numbers from China are reportedly booming as a result.
The momentum for ‘Brand New Day’ comes at a crucial time for the superhero genre. Following a period of struggle for Marvel since 2024’s ‘Deadpool & Wolverine,’ a record-breaking opening for ‘Brand New Day’ would signal that audiences are still engaged with comic book films.
As actual Friday numbers come in, it will become clearer whether the film aligns more with conservative estimates or the more optimistic projections nearing $300 million domestically. Regardless, with critics rating it around 89 percent and projections suggesting it could finish its run close to $2 billion globally, ‘Brand New Day’ is already shaping up to be one of the defining box office stories of the year.
