Not every love story begins with a charming encounter at a coffee shop, and the upcoming film from Black Bear Pictures exemplifies just how far that concept can be stretched. Following a warm reception at Sundance earlier this year, one of the festival’s most peculiar and discussed romances is set for its theatrical debut.

‘Wicker‘ first gained attention back in January when it premiered to a standing ovation, quickly becoming one of the festival’s most talked-about acquisitions. Directed by Alex Huston Fischer and Eleanor Wilson, the film adapts Ursula Wills-Jones’ short story “The Wicker Husband” into an audacious comedic fable that delves into themes of sex, marriage, and the absurdities of small-town social norms.

As its October release approaches, the film’s first official posters have arrived, offering audiences a clearer glimpse at its unconventional premise. The artwork heavily features the film’s namesake material, showcasing tightly woven basket textures around close-up shots of hands and faces, visually emphasizing the central concept of the wicker husband.

At the heart of this story is Olivia Colman, portraying an ostracized fisherwoman living on the outskirts of a small seaside village, who faces relentless mockery from her neighbors for being unmarried. Tired of the constant derision, she commissions the village’s basketmaker, played by Peter Dinklage, to create a husband entirely from wicker.

That husband comes to life in the form of Alexander Skarsgård, whose devoted and almost overly attentive demeanor towards Colman’s character disrupts the village’s rigid traditions in increasingly chaotic ways. Elizabeth Debicki completes the film’s central cast as the Tailor’s Wife, adding another layer of tension to the story’s growing web of jealousy and social upheaval.

Skarsgård’s casting was somewhat unexpected, stepping into a role initially intended for Dev Patel when the project was first announced in 2023. This change ultimately placed Skarsgård alongside a cast rich in award-winning talent, including Academy Award winner Colman and Emmy winners Dinklage and Debicki.

Black Bear has scheduled ‘Wicker’ for a limited theatrical release on October 23, followed by a broader national rollout on October 30. The film will also debut in UK and Irish cinemas on October 30, allowing international audiences to experience the film around the same time as its U.S. release.

Critical reception from Sundance has been overwhelmingly positive, with early reviews highlighting the film’s blend of absurdist comedy and genuine emotional depth. Much of the acclaim has focused on Colman’s performance, which many reviewers noted as one of her more subtly layered comedic portrayals, alongside Skarsgård’s charm in bringing an inanimate creation to unexpectedly tender life.

The film also marks a reunion for fans of ‘The Crown,’ as both Colman and Debicki previously portrayed Queen Elizabeth and Princess Diana, respectively, during different seasons of the Netflix series, despite never sharing screen time together. Seeing the two interact in ‘Wicker’ offers a rare opportunity to witness that unrealized pairing come to life.

With its Sundance buzz still resonating and a talented, award-caliber cast leading the way, ‘Wicker’ appears poised to be one of the more distinctive theatrical releases of the fall season. Whether mainstream audiences will embrace its quirky premise as festival crowds did remains to be seen once it opens widely.
