Marvel enthusiasts have been eagerly combing through every casting announcement for ‘Avengers: Doomsday‘, hoping to spot one particular name. However, Mark Ruffalo, the actor who has embodied Bruce Banner and his green alter ego since 2012, has now clarified the situation himself.

The confirmation comes directly from Ruffalo, and it’s not the news many fans were anticipating. Here’s what we currently know about the Hulk’s role in Marvel’s upcoming crossover event.

In an interview with Empire, Mark Ruffalo disclosed that the Hulk will not be making an appearance in ‘Avengers: Doomsday.’ However, he did leave the possibility of a future return open, expressing his willingness to reprise the role as long as there are exciting opportunities for the character.

This aligns with what fans had suspected for some time. Ruffalo was notably absent from the extensive casting announcement made last March, despite many believing he would be a key part of the project. The official cast still boasts a remarkable lineup of Marvel veterans and newcomers.

Ruffalo also humorously addressed his absence during an appearance on ‘The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon.’ When asked why he wasn’t featured in the trailer, he joked that it was better for him not to be included than risk revealing spoilers about the next movie.

The reasons behind Bruce Banner’s absence seem to stem from scheduling conflicts and franchise logistics rather than a creative decision. Ruffalo’s four-year hiatus from the character is expected to end with his return in ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day,’ which is already generating excitement.

Additionally, there are ongoing rights issues surrounding the character. Universal retains the distribution rights to solo Hulk films, which has restricted Marvel Studios’ use of the character, confining him mainly to team-up projects rather than standalone films.

Fans looking for a glimpse of Bruce Banner’s next chapter can hold onto some hope. Set photos from the upcoming Spider-Man film reportedly show Bruce Banner on a stretcher, suggesting he may be injured or disoriented after a transformation, which supports earlier reports of Ruffalo’s return in that movie.

Ruffalo isn’t the only beloved character missing from the current ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ lineup. Jeremy Renner’s Hawkeye and Scarlett Johansson’s Black Widow are also absent, which is significant given their central roles in the franchise’s history.

Since concluding his storyline in ‘Avengers: Endgame,’ Ruffalo has not completely vanished from the MCU. He has made appearances in ‘She-Hulk: Attorney at Law,’ ‘What If…?,’ and ‘Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings.’ However, none of these roles have placed him back in the blockbuster spotlight like ‘Doomsday’ would have.

The confirmed cast for ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ remains impressive, featuring Chris Hemsworth, Simu Liu, Robert Downey Jr., Letitia Wright, Anthony Mackie, Ian McKellen, Vanessa Kirby, and Florence Pugh, among many other familiar faces from across the studio’s projects.

Looking ahead, the focus now shifts to ‘Avengers: Secret Wars,’ the direct sequel to ‘Doomsday.’ The Russo Brothers are expected to start filming that movie in the UK later this year, which many believe is a logical opportunity for Ruffalo’s Hulk to make a comeback, although Marvel Studios has yet to confirm this in an official casting announcement.

There’s also considerable speculation regarding the expanding Hulk mythology on screen. The MCU currently features multiple gamma-powered characters, including a Red Hulk who remains alive in The Raft, alongside an Abomination and the looming presence of the Leader, hinting at a potentially larger green-powered showdown in the future.

‘Avengers: Doomsday’ is directed by the Russo Brothers, who are collaborating with Stephen McFeely, their longtime partner on the Avengers and Captain America franchises, with Michael Waldron also contributing to the screenplay. The film is scheduled for release on December 18, with ‘Avengers: Secret Wars’ following on December 17, 2027.

For now, Bruce Banner’s next confirmed live-action appearance is in ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day,’ which stars Tom Holland and is set to release on December 18, 2026. Whether this appearance will set the stage for something larger in ‘Secret Wars’ remains to be seen.

With Ruffalo hinting at a possible return in the future and ‘Secret Wars’ still shrouded in mystery, do you believe the Hulk’s absence from ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ is the right decision, or should Marvel have found a way to include the Jade Giant in this epic showdown?
