Christopher Nolan has consistently defied box office expectations throughout his career, but the success of his latest film, ‘The Odyssey’, is reaching unprecedented heights. Just weeks after its premiere, ‘The Odyssey’ is setting new records for Nolan’s filmography in ways that seemed unimaginable a month ago.

Since its debut on July 17, the film’s epic narrative has shown remarkable staying power at the domestic box office, achieving strong weekday numbers that have often outperformed typical blockbuster trends. This consistent momentum has led to a staggering box office comparison this year.

According to Deadline, ‘The Odyssey’ earned 13.6 million dollars on Wednesday alone, bringing its domestic total to 334.2 million dollars, officially surpassing ‘Oppenheimer’s’ lifetime domestic gross of 330 million dollars. Notably, while Nolan’s Oscar-winning 2023 biopic took 595 days in theaters to achieve that total, ‘The Odyssey’ accomplished it in just 13 days.

This achievement positions ‘The Odyssey’ as Nolan’s third-highest-grossing film domestically, following ‘The Dark Knight’ at 534.9 million dollars and ‘The Dark Knight Rises’ at 448.1 million dollars. Given the film’s current pace, both of these long-standing records could be within reach before its theatrical run concludes.

Much of this success can be attributed to its strong weekday performance, a time when even successful blockbusters typically see a decline. The film recorded the biggest Monday of 2026 with 18 million dollars and the second-biggest Tuesday, even surpassing ‘The Dark Knight’s’ own Tuesday gross from 2008, a rare accomplishment for a film several weeks into its release.

Premium formats have also significantly contributed to sustaining this momentum. IMAX’s limited 70mm screens, of which only 41 exist worldwide, have added nearly 16.9 million dollars to the film’s total gross, accounting for over 12% of its entire IMAX box office revenue despite the limited number of theaters.

The film’s opening weekend retention has been impressive, dropping only 30% in its second weekend after debuting with 123.5 million dollars domestically. This level of retention ranks among the best for films that open above the 100 million dollar mark, trailing only ‘Wicked: Part One’ and ‘Top Gun: Maverick’ in recent box office history.

Globally, ‘The Odyssey’ has already surpassed 639.9 million dollars after just two weekends in theaters, leading many industry analysts to believe it could exceed the 1 billion dollar mark worldwide before its run ends. This would place it ahead of ‘Oppenheimer’s’ eventual 975.8 million dollar global total, a milestone that took Nolan’s previous film significantly longer to reach.

Despite ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ now leading the box office, industry experts anticipate ‘The Odyssey’ will maintain its strong performance in its third weekend, with projections suggesting a decline of no more than 50%, or around 45 million dollars. For a film entering its third week against one of the year’s biggest new releases, such resilience highlights the film’s strong connection with audiences.

With records being broken almost daily, ‘The Odyssey’ has firmly established itself as one of the year’s defining box office stories, and Nolan’s filmography is being rewritten alongside it.
