Completing a cherished book-to-screen adaptation is no easy feat, particularly when the original material has already revealed the story’s conclusion. Yet, ‘The Summer I Turned Pretty‘ continues to find innovative ways to astonish its loyal audience as it approaches the end.

This is exactly the hint that Gavin Casalegno, who portrays Jeremiah Fisher in the popular Prime Video series, shared about the upcoming film that will conclude the franchise. After the show finished its third and final season in September, Prime Video announced shortly after the finale aired that the narrative was not entirely over, with a feature film penned and directed by author Jenny Han set to properly wrap up the saga.

In an interview with PEOPLE while promoting his new horror-thriller ‘The Devil’s Mouth,’ Casalegno provided a sneak peek into what viewers can anticipate from the film. When asked if he could reveal anything about the movie, the actor hinted that the ending still holds many surprises.

“Oh, man. I think people are going to be surprised,” Casalegno told PEOPLE. He expressed particular curiosity about how audiences will respond to Han’s “closing thoughts and statements” as she brings the trilogy to its ultimate conclusion.

This aligns with previous comments from Han, who has consistently indicated that the true ending of the story would catch long-time readers off guard. In a discussion with Entertainment Weekly before the final season premiered, Han explained that fans would encounter “things they think they know” intertwined with genuine surprises she has been building toward.

Despite being part of the franchise from the beginning, Casalegno has been quite open about how little he knows regarding the movie’s storyline. He previously joked to Vogue Italia during Milan Fashion Week that he had attempted and failed to extract information from Han, admitting he was completely in the dark about what lies ahead for his character.

This uncertainty also applies to Jeremiah’s romantic future, which took an unexpected twist in the season three finale when his character shared a surprise kiss with Denise, played by Isabella Briggs. Casalegno described that moment as a genuine “curveball” for him as an actor, suggesting that even the cast was not entirely prepared for the direction the story was taking into the finale.

Casalegno is not alone in his surprise. Co-star Sean Kaufman, who plays Steven, shared with PEOPLE that he was not as taken aback by the Jeremiah and Denise pairing, noting that certain lines from earlier episodes hinted at the storyline’s direction, even if most viewers did not catch on until it unfolded on screen.

The love triangle at the heart of the franchise, involving Belly Conklin, Conrad Fisher, and Jeremiah, has remained the emotional core of the series since its debut, and speculation about how the movie will ultimately resolve that dynamic has intensified since the season three finale aired. With Han returning to both write and direct the film, fans have reason to believe that the ending will reflect the same authorial voice that characterized the original book trilogy.

In addition to his cryptic hints about the ‘Summer I Turned Pretty’ movie, Casalegno also shared his experiences filming ‘The Devil’s Mouth’ in Thailand alongside co-stars Lana Condor, Kathryn Newton, and Tayme Thapthimthong, describing the transition from studio work to shooting on boats and islands as a refreshing change of pace. For now, however, all attention remains on the surprises Han has in store for Belly, Conrad, and Jeremiah’s long-awaited final chapter.
