‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ IMAX Release Date and Expansion Details
‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ has been making waves with its impressive box office performance since its release, but one notable format has been absent from the celebration until now. Tom Holland’s portrayal of Peter Parker hit theaters on July 31, but it lacked the IMAX rollout typically expected for a Marvel blockbuster of this scale, a noticeable gap considering the film’s otherwise record-breaking debut.
The absence of IMAX screenings was due to Christopher Nolan’s ‘The Odyssey,’ which secured an exclusive multi-week IMAX window starting July 17. This exclusivity meant that ‘Brand New Day’ was unable to utilize the IMAX format during its crucial opening weekend, even as the Spider-Man sequel broke records in other premium formats such as ScreenX, 4DX, and Dolby Cinema.
However, this situation is about to change. Sony Pictures has confirmed that ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ will begin its IMAX expansion across North America starting August 6, as per the studio’s official announcement.
According to the new arrangement, ‘Brand New Day’ will share the IMAX global network with ‘The Odyssey’ at select digital IMAX locations in North America, while Nolan’s film retains exclusive rights to all 41 of IMAX’s 70mm film locations.
This distinction is significant for those wanting to experience either film in the highest quality possible. ‘The Odyssey’ was filmed entirely using IMAX’s 70mm film cameras, making those specific screens the ideal venue for Nolan’s project, while ‘Brand New Day’ will have access to the broader digital IMAX network, allowing more audiences to enjoy Spider-Man’s latest adventure on the big screen.

Internationally, ‘Brand New Day’ has already seen great success in IMAX where it has been available. In China, the film achieved a $19.2 million IMAX opening weekend, setting franchise records for Spider-Man in that region, while additional IMAX screenings in Japan and South Korea contributed to a total of $23 million across those three markets during its debut. Notably, ‘The Odyssey’ has not yet premiered in Chinese IMAX theaters, with its debut scheduled for August 14.
The North American IMAX expansion comes at a time when ‘Brand New Day’ is already demonstrating its ability to achieve historic box office numbers without IMAX. The film opened with an estimated $355 million domestically and $927 million globally, making it the second-largest global opening in box office history, just behind ‘Avengers: Endgame.’ Sony has also committed to a minimum 60-day theatrical exclusivity window for the film, allowing it to continue building on these impressive figures into the fall.
For fans eager to see Peter Parker confront a new shape-shifting threat on the largest screen possible, the August 6 expansion finally provides that opportunity domestically. This development also highlights a shift in how competing blockbusters are learning to coexist within IMAX’s limited screen availability, allowing access to both digital and film-based venues rather than sidelining one title entirely.
With both ‘The Odyssey’ and ‘Brand New Day’ performing at record levels, IMAX’s capacity to host two major hits simultaneously could influence how future scheduling conflicts are resolved between studios. For now, moviegoers excited to see Spider-Man swing across an IMAX screen can finally mark their calendars for the upcoming date.
