Henry Cavill’s ‘Warhammer 40,000’ Universe Expands With New Animated Series at Amazon
Henry Cavill’s venture into the realm of ‘Warhammer 40,000’ is set to grow even further. Amazon MGM Studios, Blur Studios, and Games Workshop are collaborating on a new animated event series within this beloved sci-fi universe, with Cavill serving as an executive producer. This exciting news was first reported exclusively by Variety.
This animated project is being developed alongside Amazon’s anticipated live-action ‘Warhammer 40,000’ series, which is also expected to feature Cavill. While specifics about the live-action show are still under wraps, the new animated series offers fans another opportunity to delve into the expansive universe filled with epic battles, futuristic armies, and alien threats.
The upcoming series will serve as a spinoff of Amazon’s animated anthology series ‘Secret Level,’ which included a ‘Warhammer 40,000’ episode upon its premiere in late 2024. Blur Studios, the creative force behind the animation for ‘Secret Level,’ will once again bring this world to life, with Games Workshop, the creator of the tabletop game, remaining closely involved in the project.
Dave Wilson, who directed the ‘Warhammer 40,000’ episode of ‘Secret Level’ and served as the show’s supervising director, will take the helm of the new animated series as co-creator and director. He is collaborating with writer John Orloff, known for his contributions to series like ‘Masters of the Air’ and ‘Band of Brothers.’
While story details are currently under wraps, Variety reports that the series will center on The Deathwatch, an elite group of Space Marines trained to track down dangerous alien foes. This group is among the most esteemed forces in the ‘Warhammer 40,000’ universe, making them an ideal choice for a grand animated narrative.
Wilson expressed his enthusiasm for broadening the world beyond the original ‘Secret Level’ episode. “‘Secret Level’ wasn’t conceived simply as an anthology. It was designed as a launchpad for larger stories,” Wilson stated. He noted that the response from fans to the ‘Warhammer 40,000’ episode demonstrated how much audiences valued the effort put into honoring the source material.
“The response to the ‘Warhammer’ episode was extraordinary, particularly from fans who understood how much care went into getting the world right,” Wilson elaborated. “This series gives us the opportunity to build on that foundation and tell a much larger story.”
The filmmaker also shared that his desire to tell a longer ‘Warhammer 40,000’ story has been a personal ambition for many years. “I’ve wanted to tell a long-form story set in ‘Warhammer 40,000’ for more than twenty years,” Wilson remarked, expressing gratitude to Games Workshop and Amazon MGM Studios for making this project a reality.
Cavill’s participation further solidifies his deep connection with the franchise. The actor has long been a fan of ‘Warhammer 40,000’ and has previously expressed his eagerness to introduce the universe to a broader audience. Alongside Cavill, producers for the animated series include Natalie Viscuso, Tim Miller, Dave Wilson, Roy Lee, and Andy Smillie from Games Workshop.
Amazon has been heavily investing in video game and fantasy adaptations in recent years. The company has achieved success with shows like ‘Fallout’ and is also working on other major projects based on popular franchises, including ‘Tomb Raider,’ ‘God of War,’ ‘Mass Effect,’ and ‘Wolfenstein.’
With both animated and live-action projects in the pipeline, Amazon seems poised to transform ‘Warhammer 40,000’ into one of its most significant entertainment universes. For fans of the franchise, Cavill’s involvement could signal the dawn of a much larger era for this iconic sci-fi world.
